The Miracle Sand Blocks

You will love how this sand blocks activity brings this song to life (more living music ideas)! No need to bring in any fancy instruments for this activity. You can make your own sand block instruments for less than $5 and have plenty for everyone!

Today, I’m sharing some sand block actions that pair well each miracle in the first verse of this beautiful primary song that is now included in the new hymnbook! Hooray!

Before passing out sand blocks, sing through the first verse once. If you don’t already have a copy of our The Miracle flip chart for this New Testament song, it’s nice to have handy!

This song teaches about so many miracles! It’s hard to remember them all. Let’s try some actions to help us remember. Pass out a set of sand blocks to each child. If you are short on sand blocks sets, take turns with a partner.

Demonstrate the first action by patting your knees, alternating left and right to imitate walking. One miracle Jesus performed was walking on water.

Can you make your sand blocks sound like thunder? Clap them loudly together, then pause and hold them still. Jesus “stilled the storm and calm the angry sea.”

Does anyone know what leprosy is? It’s a very painful disease that affects your skin. Tap each hand with your sand blocks to demonstrate that Jesus “healed the leper.”

Next, cover your eyes and uncover them as you sing the phrase, “the blind to see.” Jesus fed thousands of people with only a small amount of food. Swish your sand blocks near your mouth for the line – “He fed a thousand people with a loaf or two of bread.”

Lastly, slowly raise your sand blocks in the air.

Can we try them all? This is where the visuals will really come in handy. Tape a copy of the printable sand block actions on the board to follow along with as you sing the entire first verse.

Sing through the entire song a few times using the sand block actions. This is a great way to get in lots of song practice without becoming too repetitive. Collect all the sand blocks at the end, saving a minute or two to share your testimony.

  • Make it a partner activity by swapping the knee pats to sand block claps with a partner. This is especially fun for your social primary kids!
