4th of July Pin the Star on the Flag
4th of July is coming up so quickly this year! Although summer time can be a busy time for families, 4th of July is always a nice break to just relax and spend time with family celebrating America’s wonderful freedoms.
Before primary, create an American flag with our printable stars and stripes or by drawing a flag on a poster board. You can find this printable later in the post. If using the printable, cut out the square, stripes, and smaller stars.
Piece the flag together with the blue 1-page square followed by 2 pages with 7 rows and 3 pages with 6 rows below. Here’s a basic model of how the printable flag will look:
You can optionally tape 5 stars onto the square, leaving one out. Or leave the whole space blank, or use one of the star outlines to give the kids a goal.
If you want to draw your own flag, grab a poster board from Walmart or Dollar Tree and some large poster markers. Draw a large flag and tape some stars on the blue square. This is what your flag will look like:
How to Play:
Tape your flag on the board or use magnets to keep it up. Blindfold a child and place a star in their hand. Turn them around a few times, then have them try to pin the star in the correct location on the flag.
Have 2 different songs ready to review, one for red stripes and one for white stripes. If the star lands in the square, let the child choose the song AND choose a fun way to sing!
Continue letting the kids take turns to try and pin the star on the flag! Review songs depending on where the star lands and have some laughs along the way!
Since the idea is pretty simple, I’ve also included 4 extension ideas below. Each of these ideas provides a fun way to add to this idea!
Extension Activities:
- Write a fun way to sing on each stripe. If a child lands on stripes, turn the poster around and sing how the stripe indicates!
- Have each child choose a partner. When a partnership is chosen, one child gets blindfolded while the other does not. The child who is not blindfolded can help the child pin the star by giving clues without guiding their hand.
- See how many stars you can pin on the flag! Decide on a special reward for reaching the goal (song pick, dance scarves, instruments).
- Use white star stickers and let each child try to get a star into one of the 50 star spots!
