This activity works great as an introduction to this song, but it can also be paired with another activity as a review. I’ve included a few different ways to use this activity, but the basic idea is to simply share your testimony.
There are no additional prep materials for this activity, but feel free to make it your own. One way to do this is by setting up a simple display on the table with pictures of Christ, the temple, or your family. This will immediately draw their attention and invite the Holy Ghost into primary.
A simple testimony can be a powerful way to help your primary children feel the spirit as they begin learning this song. I hope you are able to feel the truthfulness of the words in this song each time you sing it with your primary kids.
Primary Leaders Testimony Share:
This version of the activity is perhaps the simplest: just share your testimony. If this song is brand new to your primary kids, bring in a picture of Christ and set it on the table. Then, bear your testimony.
After you share a few thoughts, explain that you’ll be learning a new song about building and sharing our testimonies. Begin teaching the words to the first verse (I Will Be What I Believe flip chart here).
Another option is to ask another primary leader or primary teacher to share their testimony as well. As we learn in 2 Nephi 29:8, multiple witnesses (testimonies) are important to learning the true nature of Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father.
Invite a Special Guest:
Primary children always get excited when there is a special guest in primary. Invite a member of the Bishopric to come share their testimonies with the children. For a neat review idea, you could even let the children spend a few minutes teaching the song to your Bishop.
Another awesome choice for a special guest for this song is a missionary! Invite your current missionaries or a recently returned missionary to share their testimony. Have the kids perform the song for the missionaries, then listen as they share their testimonies with the class. Ask them to give ideas for how the children can share the gospel with their friends and family members.
Mini-Testimony Meeting:
Another spiritual experience you can facilitate is a mini-testimony meeting in singing time. Set aside 5-10 minutes for primary children to come up and share their testimonies. It’s so sweet to hear the simple testimonies of children.
You could also pass out paper for the children to write down their testimonies. This is a great opportunity for the kids to think about their testimonies without the pressure of standing at the front of the room. - Read the stories of the people mentioned in this song, including Joseph Smith, pioneers, Stripling Warriors, and Nephi. Find short scripture verses or conference talks about these individuals to read and discuss during singing time. How can their courage and testimonies strengthen ours?
- Have the kids write down a time they exercised faith. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize our own experiences with faith, but as we write them down, we can remember and share them with others.
