As primary music leaders, our purpose is to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ through music. Primary songs teach such beautiful lessons about Heavenly Father’s plan for us and how to return to Him.
They teach us about the love our Savior has for each one of us and help us understand how to become more like Him. This week, review The Church of Jesus Christ by sharing favorite primary songs. Use this spiritual connections activity to strengthen testimonies as you learn this bold song.
The Church of Jesus Christ Song Testimony
I remember learning this short song when I was in primary. I love the bold statements in this song that testify of our identies as disciples of Christ. Help your primary children better understand the message of this song by sharing their testimonies.
Start by reviewing The Church of Jesus Christ. Your primary kids might already be familiar with this song, but if not, it will likely be an easy one to learn! Write the following statements on the board: “I know who I am. I know God’s plan. I’ll follow Him in faith.”
Ask the children: How do we know who we are? What is Heavenly Father’s Plan? How do we follow Him? Have the children ponder this question as you pass out blank sheets of paper. I’ve included a printable with simple half-sheet pages with prompts that read, “My favorite primary song is…” and “I like this song beause…”
Explain that the primary songs we learn help us to know that we are children of a loving Heavenly Father and that we can return to Him by becoming like His son, Jesus Christ.
While listening to the pianist quietly play the song, have the children quietly think about their favorite primary song or hymn. Your primary children may need some help writing. This is a great way to involve your primary teachers! For older primary children, invite them to write a simple testimony on their paper.
Then, ask if anyone would like to share their favorite primary song or share their testimony. Have them come to the front of the room to share. Then, sing that song together! To provide as many opportunities as possible, I recommend singing only one verse of each song.
Continue sharing testimonies and singing favorite primary songs as a primary. Invite the children to notice when they feel the Holy Ghost during primary. Sing The Church of Jesus Christ one more time before you close.
At the end of singing time, finish by sharing your testimony about how the songs we learn in primary can help us strengthen our testimonies.
You’ll notice that this lesson doesn’t incorporate a lot of repetition for the song. If your primary children are unfamiliar with this song, it might be best to pair this activity with another one of our ideas, like this sentence maze activity. This way, you’ll get in more repetition while still having the opportunity to share testimonies.
Extension Activities:
- Invite teachers to come up and share their favorite primary songs and a brief testimony. Children can strengthen their own testimonies when they hear a testimony from their teacher. We can all be uplifted this way!
- Watch one of the inspirational messages from the Church website. There are so many good ones to choose from! This sweet I am a Child of God video shows children of God, young and old, to remind us that we are all children of a loving Heavenly Father.
- Create a song chain! Cut out long strips of paper before primary. Have the kids write their favorite primary song on a strip. Loop and staple the strips to create a long chain of primary songs to display in your primary room!
