Are you looking for a super fun and low-key activity to celebrate all the kiddos in your Primary room? Why not have a birthday party! This is a great activity to do in the summer months while many people are traveling and there are lots of birthdays to celebrate. Or, have a Birthday Cake Party Singing Time at the beginning of the year as you introduce all your new song picks and have a birthday party!
Birthday Cake Party Singing Time Idea
Celebrate the birthday of everyone with one big birthday party singing time!
Cut and laminate all the birthday cake cards. Write your choice of song title on the back of each card or a fun way to sing. If you use a wet erase marker you can remove what you write later with a wet cloth but it won’t wipe off during singing time.
Start by singing the classic “Happy Birthday” song or any of the birthday songs from the Children’s songbook.
Invite a child to come up draw a random card out of a bag. Reveal the cake selected and sing the song from the back of the card or sing your preselected song choice with the way to sing written, instead!
You can invite your helper to lead the song or help in another way. One fun might idea might to have them wear a birthday hat or crown!
Continue to invite a new helper and pick another cake card until you make your way through all of the birthday cakes!
Extension Activities:
- Use one birthday cake per month (the number that matches the month) and celebrate all of the birthdays of that month. You could let the birthday kiddos pick a favorite song, follow the singing action that pairs with each cake, sing a birthday song, or just give your birthday kiddos a special job such as leading, holding a flip chart for you, or passing out manipulatives.
- Use the #8 birthday cake for each of your Primary children the month they turn 8! Sing “When I Am Baptized” and use your ribbon wands to celebrate their big birthday!
- Have a big “moving up” party at the beginning of the year as the kids move up one class by age. Invite all the children from the specific age class (all kid that will turn 5 that year, for example) to come up front to be recognized. They can help you conduct while you sing through whichever song you want to work on.
- Print two copies of each of the birthday cakes. Play a game of match and when you find matching cakes sing through the coordinating song or way to sing.
- Sing the number of lines based on the cake number – with as few as 1 line of the song or up to 12 lines of the song (start from the beginning if you run out of lines). Count out the lines on your fingers as you sing so everyone can follow along!
- Invite everyone who is at least 1 year old to sing through the song. Then, on to number 2, etc etc. This will be a fun and different way to divide the room! You’ll end with your oldest class as the last group standing. This could be a really fun send off activity for their last singing time!
Celebrate Primary’s Birthday!
Did you know that Primary has a birthday? The Primary organization began on Sunday, August 25, 1878.
Primary was founded by Aurelia Spencer Rogers who served as the first president of the Primary organization. The original Primary included 224 members with children ages 4-14 included within the program. Now, there are well over 1 million children apart of Primary all over the world!
