Easter Hosanna Cup Actions
Sing through Easter Hosanna (flip chart here) once, before bringing out the cups and your pattern to help bring the song to life.
Then, sing the first line of the song and demonstrate the pattern. Pass out the cups and try the first line as you demonstrate the pattern. Start at the beginning again after that first line, and sing all the way through to the chorus.

Pause at the chorus, and show the children the pattern as you sing the first half of the chorus. Try it together with the chorus.
Finally start at the beginning of the song and follow along with the cup pattern the whole way through the song.

Easter Hosanna Cup Pattern
- Tap the top of the cup as it sits on the ground or your lap 4 times using your right hand, left hand, right, then left. “The prophecies”
- Hold the cup and tap it along the ground or your lap moving from left to right with 4 distinct taps following each beat. “of long ago”. On the next two lines, you can instead of going right to left, move from low down to up high tapping the air with the cup for risen and revealed.
- For the next two measures you’ll flip over the cup and tap it down twice, then flip over once more (so the open part is facing downward) and tap down again twice. “were now at last” and “fulfilled”
- Repeat 3 more times for the rest of the lines of the verse following the same pattern.
- Hold the cup to your mouth for “Hosanna”
- Pass the cup behind your back on “blessed be the name of the”
- Tap the cup on your palm for the final three words “Most High God”
- Then repeat the chorus pattern one more time.

Extension Activities:
- To up the challenge, sit in a circle and instead of the flip and tap-tap, you can flip and pass to a partner to the right, then grab the cup from your left – flip and pass to a partner to the right one more time.
- Have the children help you come up with a new action instead of passing the cup behind your back. What might they like to try instead! Maybe toss and catch?
- Cut out the actions and rearrange them in a new order and try again!
