Build an Ark Fill in the Phrase

Sing through Build an Ark (flip chart here) once, before introducing this activity. This will help keep the words fresh in the Primary children’s minds as you begin this fill in the phrase challenge.

Share the first fill in the phrase challenge. Read it out loud for your non-readers to be able to help solve the puzzle. With an older Primary, you can have a child come up front to write in the missing words (help them with spelling as needed – or take any spelling). You can also invite them to draw a symbol instead of writing the word if they would prefer to draw something for the missing words.

Sing through the song up to the part that you have filled in, then reveal the next fill in the phrase challenge.

Continue to work your way through the song one line at a time and singing from the beginning of the song as you build up the song and fill in each of the phrases.

Extension Activities:

• After finishing all the phrases, invite the children to remove any two that they would like. Now, sing together without those helps up on the board. Continue to work your way through the song this time removing the phrases.
• Put all of the missing fill in the phrase challenges up on the board. You can even put them up on the board out of order and upside down to up the challenge. Let one of your Primary children come up front and pick one of the fill in the phrase challenges. This will have them answering the fill the phrase challenges in the order they choose or in a random order which will up the challenge!

• Divide the room into two teams. You can do right side vs left side, boys vs girls, or even kids vs teachers! Have the teams take turns picking a fill in the phrase challenge. If the team member can get it right in one guess without any help, give them 3 points. Give the child another chance by playing the piano part (or you humming) award them 2 points if they can finish the phrase correctly. If they need more help, they can ask their team for help! If the team helps them finish the phrase they earn 1 point. If they still can’t get it correct, the other team has a chance to steal the point.
• Hand out a 1-page fill in the phrase challenge to each class. Have each class work together to finish all the phrases. You can simply sing through the song 2-3 times while they work on their handout or work through it at the same time as you call out a color or number and have them listen for those missing words.
