Build an Ark Lead Like Noah
Sing through Build an Ark with this flip chart once, before introducing this fun leading activity.
Invite a child to come up front and pretend to be Noah! Can he help you lead the people to come to the ark? They will get to choose fun actions for leading and conducting the music!

Hand your helper a leading baton, if you have one, or use a similar object such as a rhythm stick, a pencil, or magic wand, or pointer finger. Have the child pick one of the leading styles to lead. They can move their pointer from one option to the other while pointing to the poster or simply indicate which method they will be leading with (such as speed) and then use their pointer to adjust the singing style!
- Slow / Fast – Start down low for slow and move up high for fast
- Left / Right – Point the wand to the side of the room to sing
- Stand / Sit – Point the wand up high to stand and sidewise in front for sit
- Sing / Freeze – Point around the wand like leading music, then freeze in one spot when it’s time to freeze. Another option is to lead music, then turn around to “freeze” – don’t get caught moving when the music leader turns around!
Let a new helper come up each time you sing through the song for lots of variety.

Extension Activities:
- If you can, use a small step stool to help set the stage of what it might have been like for Noah to stand and cry repentance to the people of his day. You can also have the child dress up with a simple sheet or a cloak and you can even add a wig and a beard!
- Divide the room into 2-3 groups. Have your “Noah” conductor point to groups to decide who sings instead! They can change up which group sings during the song.
- You can instead help the children learn to lead a 4/4 measure as you sing through this song! After some practice, you can let them adjust speed by how fast they move the baton or who sings by where they are pointing, for example.
- Start at the top and draw a straight line down “Noah”
- Draw a small hill to your left “was a”
- Now, draw a little bit bigger hill to the right then swoop down like you are forming a lake “pro-”
- Bring your final line back up to the top starting point with a swoop incline “-phet a”
