These simple hand actions are a sure way to teach this song with ease! I’ve created hand actions for the first verse and chorus of Shawna Edwards’ song, Choose Him Again (archives).

Sometimes it can be challenging to teach songs that are not in the Children’s Songbook because they are typically longer and may have some tricky lyrics. However, songs like this one teach powerful principles that can help strengthen young testimonies.

For a fun way to teach this song in primary, try using these hand actions! I recommend following along with the printable action words posters included later in this post. This is a great way to add a visual element that makes the actions even easier to follow.

How to Play:

At the beginning of singing time, sing through the first verse and chorus once, using this Choose Him Again flip chart. We’re going to learn some actions to help us remember the words! Can I have some helpers?

Choose some volunteers to come up and help you demonstrate actions in the pattern. You’ll have 9 different actions for this pattern, so if you have a larger primary, 9 volunteers is great! Or, you can pick 3-4 helpers and alternate.

Point down to the earth, then point upward as you sing, “Before we came here / we all lived in heaven.” Ask your first helper to do this line.

Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us so much. Stretch out your arms to the side with palms facing upward as you sing, “With Heavenly Father and Jesus, His Son.” Have your next helper do this action.

Point to your mind: “They taught us to choose good from evil.” Can you show us your muscles? Continue moving down your row of helpers to demonstrate the pattern. Sing through the verse, pointing to each helper as you sing.

Then, cross your arms to make a big letter, “X”or for the line, “For Satan tried to destroy us forever.” Turn to the side as you sing, “To make us turn from the things we were taught.” Let’s shake our finger for “nothing could keep us,” and stretch our arms out wide when we sing, “choosing Jesus.” Lastly, put your hand over your heart for the last line of the verse.

Let’s try it together! Have all the kids try the verse pattern a few times before moving on to the chorus.

• Point to the Ground/Point Upward = “Before we came here / we all lived in heaven”
• Hands Outstretched = “With Heavenly Father and Jesus, His Son
• Point to your head = “They taught us to choose good from evil”
• Muscles = “To be prepared for the battle to come.”
• Cross Arms X = “Satan tried to destroy us forever”
• Turn to Side = “Make us turn from the things we were taught”
• Shake finger “No” = “Nothing could keep us”
• Hands Outstretched = “Choosing Jesus”
• Hand over heart = “We loved the plan of God”

Chorus Actions:

• Hand Over Heart = “Choose Him”
• Spin = “Again”
• Hands Outstretched” = “He’s our Savior”
• High Five Neighbor = “and friend”
• Gentle March = “He’ll help and guide us each day”
• Point W/ Both Fingers = “He will show us the way”
• Thumbs Up = “To be the best us we possibly can”

Extension Activities:

• Have the Primary children help you come up with actions for the 2^nd verse.
• Invite the children to stand on their favorite color (that matches a specific action) and quickly sit back down again. Next, stand and sit on the colored action that matches what color they are wearing. Finally, stand and sit on the colors 2 of their friends are wearing.
• Switch seats with a neighbor for all of the Heart actions!
