Choose to Serve the Lord Emoji Picture Match

Your visual and logical learners will especially love this fun emoji picture match idea! The basic idea behind this activity is to match emojis to their corresponding scripture hero from the song!

I’ve created a simple printable with emoji cards that represent lyrics from the first verse. As you sing, match the emojis to each hero mentioned in the song.. For this activity, I just grabbed photos from the Church’s gospel art kit.

The only prep work you’ll need to do beforehand is cut out all the emoji picture cards and print scripture hero pictures.

How to Play:

Start by singing through Choose to Serve the Lord (lyrics here) once. This is a great way to invite the Spirit and remind the children of the lyrics before challenging them with this activity!

Then, tape one scripture hero picture to the board. Who is this? That’s right – It’s Queen Esther! Now, on the other side of the board, tape up all the emoji cards.

Hmm, what do these symbols mean? 3 of these pictures match with Queen Esther. Can you guess which ones they are?

Sing through the song again, listening carefully for some clues. *Here’s a hint: Start with the crown! Pick a volunteer to come up and choose one emoji that corresponds with the picture. Awesome!

Once you have found all 3 emojis for Queen Esther, move on to the next scripture hero in the song. Continue matching each emoji card with its corresponding scripture character until you don’t have any left.

If you want to really challenge your older primary children, start with ALL the emoji action word cards on the board. Tape up all 4 scripture hero pictures and work together to match each emoji card with its corresponding scripture story!

Take some time throughout the activity to discuss how each emoji relates to the Old Testament story it references. “Queen” Esther was brave and “stood” for the “right.” How can we stand for the right?

Remember that the primary goal of singing time is to help your primary children to “feel of Heavenly Father’s love and learn about His plan of happiness” (General Handbook, 12.1.5). With this in mind, I always recommend closing with your testimony to focus on the Savior and His teachings.

Extension Activities:

  • Print out extra copies of the emoji picture cards. Place one scripture hero picture in a large manilla envelope. Add the correct emoji cards plus a few random cards! Pass out one envelope to each class and have them figure out with 3 emojis fit their scripture hero!
  • Tape the emoji cards underneath chairs. Have all the children look under their chairs and come match their emoji to the correct picture on the board.
  • Pair this activity with our Choose to Serve the Lord Action Words idea and challenge the children to think of some simple actions for each emoji!
  • Cover up each picture with the emoji cards. Can you guess which hero is hiding behind the emojis?
  • Flip the activity and start with just the emoji picture cards. What do these emojis mean? See if you can arrange the emojis in order to figure out which emojis belong to each scripture story!
