I’ve been having so much fun diving into this song and we have some super fun singing time ideas for this song title you’ll love to use when teaching this song to your Primary children.
This one today is a great example of that! It’s a fun way to help learn the lyrics while being engaging and adding challenge for the kids.

Did You Think to Pray Pick a Word
How to Play:
Sing through Did You Think to Pray hymn (flip charts here) verses you plan to include once, before beginning this activity. I recommend just picking one verse, but I’ve included all 3.
Explain how to play to the kids and show them the diagram of each of the word actions.
You will sing the song and when you get to the next blank in the song you’ll sing the word and add the action that is the correct word. Tell the children we’re trying to get 100% in sync with the right action and word!
Practice once to do the word action in sequence by substituting “left” with an action. “Ere you LEFT” – clap at the same time, then pat together at the same time, then stomp together. This will help them get a feel for how to do the activity and also help to encourage working together as a team to pick the right word instead of a silly word.
Sing through the song one line at a time adding the actions. If you’re teaching this song for the first time, pause after each line to sing the correct word with action. The first time or two, quiz the children – did you get it right? Good job! Let’s do the next! You don’t need to explain the extra repeat after the first few times.
Sing through the song from beginning to end without pausing.
If you’re looking for more repetition, sing through the song a couple more times until everyone gets the right combinations!
Extension Activities:
- Cut a line between each of the 3 colored boxes. Let a child come up to carefully rip away one of the WRONG word combinations to leave just 2 options left to pick through the next time through.
- Instead of tearing off the wrong one, try crossing out one of the wrong combinations instead.
- Do the action instead of singing the word. This will have them singing the missing word silently in their head.
- Flip over one of the pages and see if everyone can remember the keyword and matching action!
