Will you be teaching this new song this year? I’ve come up with this fun I Will Shine Types of Light lesson plan to help you teach this Primary song in a fun and engaging way that will also help bring home the central message of the song of sharing light of Christ with others!
This is a newer song created by Shawna Edwards and was recently published in the Friend magazine in January 2022 and is considered a pre-approved song to teach in Primary!
I Will Shine Types of Light
How to Play:
Sing through I Will Shine (Flip Chart here) song once, before introducing this activity.
Bring an assortment of different forms of light with actual objects or use our printable clipart if easier.
Explain that light comes in a lot of different ways. What are some forms of light? Take some answers and pull out each as they name them, such as:
- Sunlight
- Lamp
- Flashlight
- Candle
- Campfire
- Lightbulb
- Moon & Stars
- Lantern
Let the children pick one form of light to use during the next time singing through the song. Match the keyword with a simple action to repeat in place of the word “light” throughout the song!
- Hop – Small hop like on “Jesus Wants me for a Sunbeam”
- Dab – Facing forward move 2 arms straight out to the right
- Clap – One strong clap on the word light
- Pat – Patsch both hands on your lap on the keyword
- Rub Hands – Rub hands together like warming by the fire
- Spin – Quick spin on the keyword light
- Snap – Snap your fingers or clap across to a partner
- Stomp – One strong stomp on the keyword
Pick another light source and sing through the song again with a new action.
Share your testimony that we all have the light of Christ within us and we can share our light with others to help by serving those around us and becoming more like the Savior.
Extension Activities:
Lights in Action: Turn off all the lights except for your choice of light source! The kids will love the change of scene as you adjust the feeling in the Primary room with different lights. You can use finger lights to represent stars and electric forms of light, then use a battery operated candle under a tissue paper and paper towel roll campfire!
Substitute Word: Substitute the word “light” for one of the light source words! Pick out 4 and line them up on the board and replace the 4 uses of the word “light” through the first verse and chorus. Or, just repeat the same word throughout then switch. For example, “There’s a *CANDLE* within me, the perfect *LAMP* of Christ.”
