Our Time to Shine Primary Song

This is a really cool song, but one that isn’t very common or well known. It was published in the October 2014 Friend Magazine and is therefore already approved to be taught! It’s a great example of sharing our light and example like the scripture heroes the song talks about.

Our Time to Shine Singing Time Ideas

1. Our Time to Shine – Scripture Heroes

Learn about each of these inspiring scripture heroes talked about in Our Time to Shine! This is a great introduction activity and helps add meaning to individuals and their story!

2. Our Time to Shine – Lip Sync Hero Cards

Let the children step into the role of the heroes the song talks about with a fun lip sync activity! This turned out so funny!! I had wished I had a camera to see the kids very dramatic lip movements from behind the scripture cards.

I printed and used 4 of the Lip Sync Hero cards found on Camille’s Primary Ideas blog. Specifically, I printed:

  • Esther
  • Nephi
  • Mary (for Abish)
  • Captain Moroni

I would have two children (or 4 if doing both verses) come up and hold one of the printables cut out. They’d do their very best lip syncing while the rest of us sang along!

3. Our Time to Shine – Eraser Words

Write the words for one verse up on the board. I separated them with the “boy” lyrics on one side and the “girl” lyrics on the other side with a distinct line drawn between the two sets of lyrics. After each time we sang through the song, the boys would get to erase 3 of the girls words and the girls would erase 3 of the boys words.

This built-in a competition to remember their parts and they had fun being able to erase the other sides words. Grab our printable lyrics flip chart so you have those easy to access for writing them up on the whiteboard!

4. Our Time to Shine – Acting Like Heroes

Another week, I took the first lesson plan for Scripture Heroes, and had the children put their very best acting to the stories! They could act out the specific story I shared, or do any other appropriate actions that were “in character” for their person. It was a simple and fun way to repurpose (and remind) them of the scripture heroes and who they really were.

5. Our Time to Shine – Sing Like a Hero (Solos)

Once the kids had a grasp on the song — it was time to try some solos! I was surprised to find eager volunteers. You can also do small groups of 2-3. The volunteers would sing just the two sentence for their particular Scripture Hero. You could use this Candy for Courage game if you want to add an extra incentive.

6. Our Time to Shine – First Letters

As part of a review game one week, we played Tic-Tac-Toe. Each song card was displayed as a series of letters representing each of the words in the song. If they wanted to “X” out the space, they’d have to guess the song with the clue! Then, of course, we’d sing the song!

Another easy way to use this First Letter Printable is as a “crack the code” style game! Post the first letters only, and when the figure out the code you can flip it to the song title, or simply leave the letters up as a hint as they sing through the song.

For an extension activity, have the kids cross out some of the letters (or erase them if you wrote them up on the whiteboard) to make it more challenging!
