The Hearts of the Children Picture Puzzle

Here’s a fun visual lesson plan for Singing time! In this The Hearts of the Children Picture Puzzle you’ll color through different symbols that represent the song lyrics as you learn the song piece by piece as you work your way through the song.

This is a great resource to help you teach The Hearts of the Children (archives) during Singing Time! You’ll get tons of singing repetition and there’s a few alternate ways to play as well.

The Hearts of the Children Picture Puzzle

Sing through The Hearts of the Children with this flip chart one time before you introduce this picture puzzle activity. This is a great way to transition and start fresh with the song!

Post the picture puzzle pages up on the whiteboard. Ask the children what do they see? What might we be doing today with this activity?

Invite a child to come up front and color in the first symbol on the picture puzzle page. Sing the first part of the song that covers the first symbol: “The hearts of the…” Hold up a stop sign or call out “freeze!”

Invite another child to come up and color in the next symbol. Sing through that far of the song from the beginning, “The hearts of the children…” again stop the kiddos at that point in the song.

Keep working your way through the song by word or by phrase as you repeat singing from the beginning. By the end of the practice, the kids will easily know this song and have a visual picture in their mind to help them remember the words!

Extension Activities:

• Use the keyword cue cards instead. Invite 1-3 children to come up and pick out a keyword cue card to color while you sing through the song. Then, post the keyword cards up on the board. As you add more, keep rearranging the cards so they are in order.
• Hide the keyword cards around the room or under the chairs in the Primary room. Invite the children to search for a keyword cue card. If you have a large Primary, you might pick 14 kids or 1 Primary class to go on a hunt at a time. Invite those children to come up front and arrange themselves in the correct order while you sing. Can they get into the correct order before you’re done singing? Sing through the song again to check their order! Then play the scramble game again. You can also have just the children with the cue cards each sing their keyword.

• Rearrange the keyword cue cards on the board so that they are divided into two equal groups. Split your Primary room into two groups. Alternate singing by group singing the keywords on their side of the board. If both groups have “hearts” and “turn” they will both sing for each instance!
• Pass out an individual color puzzle to each Primary child or by class. Invite them to pick and choose 1-2 symbols to color each time you sing through the song.
