Sing through I Lived in Heaven with this flip chart once, before introducing this activity. This helps you remind the children of the lyrics before you get started or introduce the melody for the first time.

Post the Zig Zag Melody chart up on the board. Ask the children to share what things they notice and see. Invite the children to pay attention to what they notice while you sing through the song again. Sing through the song while the Primary children look for different patterns and things to notice as you sing.

Ask the children what did they notice as you sang through the song. Take a few responses and test out the children’s theories.

Ask the children what they notice about the blank line in the background. Do you notice the movement of the melody and notes follows that pattern? Have the children hold up their pointer finger and trace the line in the air going up and down with the movement of the notes as you sing through the song.

Continue to make your way through the song pointing out keywords and things the children notice as you sing through the melody of this song.

Extension Activities:

• Invite the children to stand up and raise up to their tip toes and squat down like they are about to sit on a chair following the up and down peaks of the melody.
• Use the blank zig zag melody chart and let the children help you place all of the icon cards where they would go in the song. You might invite 2-3 children to come up front and pick one of the icons. Then, have them listen carefully and try to put it where they think it goes within the melody. You can ask the rest of the children for help when you’ve finished singing through the song to see if they got it right, of if any of the icon cards should move a little within the melody map.

• Use the larger 2-spread zig zag melody chart for a larger format that’s easier for everyone to see. This one is design so that two pages go beside each other with one line of the song stretching across the top row before moving down to the next line.
• Invite the children to add their own drawings to the blank melody map. You might sing one line at a time and ask the children what they might like to add to the melody map to represent one of the words. Sing through the line again as you point along the zig zag and let the children tell you when to STOP for the exact placement of the drawing for that particular word. Let the child draw the image then sing through that line and the next before adding another image clue!
