Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth Scrambled Words
This scrambled words activity is a great way to review any of the verses in this sweet hymn. In this post, you’ll find a free printable with scrambled lyrics for the first verse, as well as several additional ways to use this activity in primary!
The basic idea behind this activity is to simply mix up the song lyrics. During primary, rearrange the lyrics in the correct order as you review!
How to Play:
I’ve created simple word strips with the first word or two of a phrase, followed by the rest of the phrase in scrambled order. Before singing time, print out all the scrambled word strips for the first verse.
There are two different ways to set up this activity once you’ve printed the word strips. One way is to keep each phrase together with the scrambled lyrics as is. Another way is to cut out all the words individually.
Begin singing time with a quick review of the first verse of Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth (flip chart here).
Then, post the first scrambled phrase of the song on the board as an example. Read aloud the phrase in mixed-up order. Hmm, this doesn’t sound right! Can you help me unscramble these words?
For this part of the activity, you can either have a child come up and write the correct order of the phrase or rearrange the word strips in order. Either way works great!
Once you’ve solved the first scrambled phrase, tape the rest of the scrambled lyrics on the board and sing through the song again.
Have volunteers come up to rearrange each phrase as you practice this song. Sing through the song one last time after you have unscrambled all the lyrics!
Scrambled Words Examples:
Home can be… [on] [heaven] [a] [earth] – Home can be a heaven on earth
When we are… [with] [love] [filled] – When we are filled with love
Bringing… [joy] [happiness] [and] – Bringing happiness and joy
Rich blessings… [above] [from] – Rich blessings from above
5 Extension Activities:
- Cut out each phrase with the scrambled words and put 1-2 phrases in an envelope. Create stations in each corner of the room with one envelope per station. Have each class rotate through each station and put the scrambled words back in order.
- Cut out all the scrambled words and work together to put them back in the correct order. Then, turn over a few words at a time and skip those words as you sing! Continue turning over lyrics and singing only the words that you can see!
- Assign each class 1-2 phrases to sing. Alternate or “popcorn” sing through the song.
- For Junior primary kiddos, add pictures or simple drawings! For example, for the first phrase, you could write [Picture of Home] can be a … on [picture of clouds] a [picture of earth]. Have them rearrange the pictures in the correct order.
- Have a speed challenge! Set a timer and see how long it takes the group to rearrange the lyrics.
