Kindness Begins with Me Unscramble Words
Setup:
Print the first page on orange paper and the 2nd page on blue paper. The next 3 pages on white paper. Or, you can leave them all white.
Cut out the letter cards. You can cut in the margins between each word card to make it easier, it doesn’t need to be right on the lines. Put all the word cards in a big bowl and mix.
How to Play:
Sing through Kindness Begins with Me (flip chart here) once, before introducing this activity.
Pull a word card out of the bowl and place it on the board (roughly where it might go if you can tell easily from the word. Place it with a magnet so you can easily move it around the board as needed. Invite a child to come up and pull another word card.
Ask them if they think that word goes before or after your word. Where do they think it goes in the song? Let them place it on the board where they think it might go. Sing through the song and listen to the words to see if you’re correct so far. If not, switch the cards around until the two are in the right sequence.
Have 2 more helpers come up and pick a word card and place it where they think it goes. Remember as a hint – does it go before or after the words already on the board? They can be helpful as clues!
Continue to sing through the song and add your word cards until the entire song is up on the board in the correct order. There are 24 cards so that would be 12 times through this song. You can adjust how many words you add each time to sing more or less repetitions as needed.
Extension Activities:
- If this is your first time teaching this song, build up the song a couple words at a time. Then, scramble them all at the end and let the kids visually find the next words or have a volunteer help put them in the correct order before you finish singing.
- Put the word cards in an envelope and let the kids work together in small groups to unscramble the lyrics into the correct order.
- Let 2-3 children come up front and try to get all the word cards in the correct order while everyone else sings. Then start again with a new helper.
- Clap then Pat on “He lives” instead of singing those 2 words!
- Can they crack the code? Why are some words orange and some words blue? The orange are talking about ourselves and the blue talk about being kind and doing what’s right. Why might I have picked these words to add color to them? That’s right – because WE can be KIND. This song is teaching us about making a difference and being loving to others.
