I Stand All Amazed Sway and Freeze

You will love how simple this sway and freeze movement idea (archives) is! With little to no extra prep work, this activity makes for an engaging singing time idea when you are in a pinch!

The basic idea behind this type of activity is to get the kids up and moving with simple back and forth sways. I like to follow the natural flow of the song, but just step side to side at whatever pace feels comfortable to you. Then, FREEZE!

For a neat way to focus on the lyrics, pause on all references to Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and love for us. As the song says, “I stand all amazed!” Do we truly take a moment to reflect in amazement at the perfect love and stoning sacrifice of our Savior?

Before introducing any movement, begin by singing through one verse of I Stand All Amazed (flip chart here). This activity is perfect for any verse that of this song you are teaching.

Then, ask the children: What are some of the amazing things Jesus has done for us? Invite a few volunteers to share their answers.

This song helps us Jesus Christ’s Atonement. Let’s listen closely as we sing. Each time you hear something that Jesus Christ did or does for us, freeze!

I’ve created a printable with words or phrases from the song that reference Jesus Christ. Post these on the board for a visual reference to follow as you use this movement activity in singing time.

Another *optional* but helpful tool could be a “FREEZE” sign! I love keeping popsicle sticks on hand to create little signs for primary. I typically like to cut my signs into a circle or square shape, but even just a piece of paper with the word “Freeze” will do the trick!

As you listen for words about Christ, hold up the sign to remind the kids to pause. This is also a great way to get the children involved by having someone else come up and lead the group.

Did you catch all the references to Christ? Sing through the song one more time and conclude with your testimony of Jesus Christ.

Sway and Freeze Phrases about Christ:

If you listen carefully, this song teaches us many things that Christ did and continues to do for us. For this activity, I only included phrases from the first verse, but you could definitely add more from the second and third verses as well. Here’s my list of phrases about Christ:

  • “Love Jesus offers me”
  • “Grace… He proffers me”
  • “He was crucified”
  • “He suffered”
  • “He bled and died”
  • “Care for me”
  • “Die for me”

Extension Activities:

  • Hold up a piece of paper or “FREEZE” sign and randomly pause throughout the song! You can grab a copy of our handheld “Freeze” sign in this He Sent His Son Sway and Freeze lesson plan.
  • Choose a volunteer to come up and lead the song! Let them choose when to pause. Each time you sing through the song, pick a new leader!
  • Cut out all the song phrases into word strips and place them in a bowl. Each time you sing through the song, choose 3-5 phrases. Listen closely for these phrases and FREEZE!
  • Switch up the movements! Instead of swaying back and forth, try walking in a circle, kicking your feet, rolling your arms, or standing on your tip toes.
