Are you looking for a fun and unique way to teach the Primary Song I’ll Walk with You? This is a really sweet song about including everyone and this activity helps to accentuate that important lesson! This I’ll Walk with You Mixed Instruments lesson plan will use a variety of different instruments to show how no matter if you’re different or unique, you can still play an important part in the band!
I’ll Walk with You Mixed Instruments
How to Play:
Sing through I’ll Walk with You lyrics once, before pulling out your assortment of instruments. This is a great way to transition from another activity and get the kids ready for a new activity with this song as the focus.
Pull out a variety of different instruments. You could include:
- Rhythm sticks
- Paper plates
- Sand blocks
- Egg shakers
Ask for 2-3 volunteers to come up front and hold a different one of the instruments you provide. Don’t feel like you have to include every type, just what you have on hand.
Have your volunteers tasked to follow you, as you demonstrate some actions. Clap together, then have them echo in response clapping their unique instruments together. Next, pat on your lap. See how the other instruments copy.
Continue through the list or at least a few more actions. Show the kids that it’s okay that we have different instruments, we can still use them to follow along with the music and pattern.
Thank your helpers and then pass out instruments to all of the children. Tell them they will get a chance to use the other instruments too, so don’t worry if they don’t get their first pick of instrument.
Tell the kids we are going to clap our instruments together whenever we sing the word “I”. Try that with me. Sing “I will, I will” and clap, clap.
Sing through the entire song with the first action, then continue to add on another action and continue working your way through singing the song and adding new actions!
Share how even though we are each different, like the instruments, we all can contribute in our own unique ways!
I’ll Walk with You Instrument Actions:
- Clap together = I
- Patsch on lap = You
- Touch toes = Walk
- Two quick taps = Talk
- Swish together = Will & Won’t
- Pass your instrument = People & Jesus
Extension Activities:
- Use the song map and jump in with all the actions at once if you’re brave enough for the challenge!
- Divide the actions up to a specific instrument. You might give each instrument 2 actions, for example, then try the song again with your next band!
- Skip instruments and just use your hands for a budget band, or just a different style!
