Joseph Smith’s First Prayer Crossword Puzzle
Sing through Joseph Smith’s First Prayer with this flip chart once, before introducing this crossword puzzle. This is a great way to review the words and transition from another activity.
I recommend just using this activity to teach a single verse of your choice.
Share the first clue with the children, “Oh how _____ was the…” Let’s sing through the song and listen for the missing word. Invite a child to come up front to write in the word while you sing. Or, alternatively, you can write the word together after singing through the song.

Continue to use this directed listening technique to listen for the clues and sing through the song to find the missing words. Fill in the crossword puzzle as you go.
This will give you 8 times singing through the song! You’ll add lots of repetition with purpose that helps the children listen closely and search for the answers as you sing.

Extension Activities:
- Add an action to use for each of the missing words that you use once you have added the word, you add the action when you sing that specific word. You could clap, snap, stomp, pat your lap, or even add a hand action to represent that word.
- Post a word bank to make this challenge easier to complete, if desired.

- Hide the keywords around the room. Find and pick one of the keywords. Figure out which clue this keyword fits with and which spot it belongs in. Sing only the lines for the hidden words you have found so far, building up the song like when you sing “B.I.N.G.O.”
- After you fill in the missing words, skip singing the words you have found. This is a great tool for having the children sing some keywords silently in their head as you skip singing them.
