Love is Spoken Here Hand Claps

I am so excited to share this Love is Spoken Here Hand Claps activity with you! Your primary children will love clapping along with this rhythm pattern that can be adapted in so many different ways!

In this post, I’ll share two different clapping patterns with options to challenge your primary children or keep it simple as you teach Love is Spoken Here (archives) in primary this month.

Love is Spoken Here Hand Claps

Have some fun with this living music (learning style archives) hand claps pattern that is easy to adapt for both Junior & Senior primary children! For this activity, I’ve created two versions of a clapping pattern that follows the rhythm of this primary song. 

Start by singing through Love is Spoken Here (lyrics here) once. Then, demonstrate the clapping pattern by alternating between patting your knees twice and clapping twice as you sing or say the first line. 

Can you try it with me? Have the kids mirror your as you alternate between these two actions throughout the song. Pretty easy right? 

Can we add in a little challenge? Try swapping out an action with a spin as you sing, “and I am thankful.” Then, return to the normal pat – clap pattern for the rest of the song. 

For your Senior primary children, let’s try making it a little bit more challenging! Keep the first line the same by alternating between 2 claps and 2 claps. For the second line, however, switch the knee pats for arm rolls. Alternate between rolling your arms and clapping twice. 

As you sing the third line, pat one knee at a time, then clap twice. Follow this with a spin for the phrase, “and I am thankful.” Finish off by alternating knee pats with each hand and clapping twice. Can we try the entire pattern? 

Follow along with the printable pattern to help you stay on track as you sing through the song. If you’d like to add just a little bit to the easy version of the pattern, try adding in just one of the challenge actions.

There are so many ways to build on this rhythm pattern. Take a look at some of our extension ideas below and test them out! This is a great way to get in lots of song repetition while keeping the kids engaged the whole time!

JR Primary Pattern:

PAT LAP / PAT LAP – CLAP CLAP – Alternate throughout!

Ex. “I see my moth -er kneel-ing, (Pat Lap on bolded syllables/words, clap on italicized syllables).

SR Primary Pattern:

• 1^st line: LAP / LAP – CLAP – CLAP (“I see my mother kneeling with our family each day.”)
• 2^nd line: ROLL ARMS – CLAP 2X (“I hear the words she whispers as she bows her head to pray.”)
• 3^rd line: PAT LAP ALTERNATING HANDS – CLAP 2X (“Her plea to the father quiets all my fears,”)
• 4^th line: SPIN on “And I am thankful”
• 5^th line: PAT LAP ALTERNATING HANDS – CLAP 2X  (“love is spoken here”)

Extension Activities:

• Cut out the challenge pattern into 5 strips. Randomly arrange the strips on the board to create a new rhythm pattern! 
• Make it a partner pattern! Simply clap across with a partner to add another fun challenge! Try alternating between straight across claps and diagonal claps. 
• To add some variety to the easy version, try alternating LAP LAP / CLAP CLAP for the first half of the song, then switching to LAP / CLAP for the last two lines of the song.
• Split the class into two sides. Have one side do all the claps while the other side does all other actions. See if you can stick with the beat while taking turns!
