Nephi’s Courage Words of a Prophet
I am so thankful to have a living prophet who receives revelation for the entire world. Nephi was a great example of following the prophet. He obeyed direction given by the prophet of his day, Lehi. This song is a great reminder of the importance of following the prophet’s guidance!
In preparation for this activity, I read through this article about Invitations from President Nelson in the Church News and quotes from recent General Conference talks given by President Russell M. Nelson. There is so much wonderful direction to be found in these talks!
I’ve created a printable lesson plan that includes a variety of invitations or challenges from President Nelson. Print and cut out these quotes into ¼ size squares to prepare for this activity.
The basic idea behind this activity is to read different quotes from the prophet as you review this song to help the children relate to this song.
At the beginning of primary, review Nephi’s Courage. Then, invite the children to think about the challenge(s) given to Nephi in the song. Were these challenges easy or hard? Can you think of any challenges our prophet has given us today?
Explain that prophets lead and guide the world through revelation from Heavenly Father. Pop Quiz: Who is the prophet on earth today?
Let’s read some of the challenges from our prophet, President Russell M. Nelson. Split the class into small groups. Start with one quote each.
Once your groups are seated together, have each group read their quote together. In their groups, have the children talk about why this teaching is important. You might also encourage the children to share examples of how they have followed the prophet’s recent invitations. This is a great opportunity to utilize your teachers for support!
Then, come back together as a group and share findings. Sing through Nephi’s Courage again and continue sharing quotes from the prophet.
At the end of singing time, share your testimony of following the prophet and trusting in Heavenly Father’s commandments.

Extension Activities:
- Write a fun way to sing on the back of each quote! Choose a quote randomly and sing through the song! Here are some ideas to get you started: Stand on your tip-toes, sing like a pirate, wiggle in place, stomp, clap on every other word.
- Watch a few short clips with challenges from President Nelson. For example, you might watch this short video with an important warning from President Nelson.
- Make a list on the board of all the challenges from President Nelson as children read their quotes aloud. Encourage children to choose one challenge to work on at home. Ask them about it the following week!
- Look for invitations and teachings from prophets in the previous 10-20 years. Have the children learn a little bit about each prophet as they read quotes from general conference.
