Do you do anything fun and themed for Pioneer day? I haven’t before, but I’m so excited for this fun themed activity to celebrate our Pioneer heritage! In this Pioneer Day Will the Wagon activity you’ll bring in a variety of supplies the pioneers would have needed for their journey and pick and choose which supplies to prioritize and bring along for the trip!

Pioneer Day Fill the Wagon
How to Play:
Choose a few different Pioneer themed songs to sing or stick with one of your Program songs and just use this theme. Either way, I recommend singing a Pioneer song to introduce the activity! You could even just do the simple chorus of “Pioneer Children Sang as They Walked.”
Tell the children today you need their help to pack up the wagon before it’s time to go off on the trail. Remind them that the Pioneers were not able to bring everything they might have wanted to take with them. You’ll only get to take as many supplies for how many songs we make it through today!

Let a child come up and pick one of the supplies and add it to your covered wagon. You can draw a large covered wagon on the chalkboard or whiteboard, on a poster board, or even just bring a box to add the supplies to.
I’ve also included a covered wagon here, you can also tuck your supplies behind the cute graphic to “load” them into the wagon.

Sing through your choice of song or write a song title on the back of each of the supplies to pick a variety of songs.
Continue to pick out one of the supplies and then sing through your song. You can add one of the extension ideas to mix it up, if you prefer.
Different supplies they would need to bring, with a song or way to sing tied to each item.

Extension Activities:
- Write your Program songs on the back of the supplies. You can repeat songs or break down each song by verse until all of the supplies have a song listed! This is a great way to review all your Program songs and see how the kids are doing with them so far!
- Add an associated way to sing for each object. I’ve included fun pioneer experiences matched with each object. You can share a short fun experience with each item and use the fun action and sing. Print double sided and they will end up on the back of the cards!

- Hide the different supplies all around the room. Have one child leave the room and let the children decide on one secret supply the seeker will need to look for. Sing hot & cold style by getting louder the closer they get to the correct supply. If they try to pick up the wrong supply have everyone FREEZE until they put it back and start looking again.
- Ask a child to leave the room. Invite 2-3 children to come help you quickly hide all of the supplies around the room. Invite the child back in and task them to collect as many supplies as they can (without running!) while you sing through the song. Can they find them all before you finish?
