The Priesthood is Restored Word Search
Have you ever used a word search in primary? This representation of words activity is geared more toward older primary children, as they’ll need to be able to read the words in the puzzle. However, you can include younger primary children by having them pair up with an older child and highlight or cross off letters in the puzzle.
Typically, a word search contains a word bank with words to find in the puzzle. However, we don’t need a word bank for this activity because ALL the lyrics will be in the puzzle. This is the perfect way to see how well your primary children know the song!!
Since this song is so short, I thought it would be fun to have the kids follow along in the puzzle and find all the song lyrics. In this puzzle, simply start at the top and look through each line to find which word comes next in the song!
Before introducing the word search, sing through The Priesthood is Restored (lyrics here) once. This is a great way to keep the song fresh in everyone’s minds as you review!
Then, tape the word search on the board. This word search contains ALL the words in the entire song! Can anyone tell me how the song starts? That’s right! “The Priesthood is restored!” Let’s see if we can find these words in our word search.
Sing through the song again while the children look for the first few words of the song. All the words can be found in the order than they appear in the song. So, the first word will be at the very top left-hand corner! Choose a volunteer or two to come up and highlight each word.
Which word comes next? Continue looking through each line of the word search for song lyrics. To help you keep track of your progress, highlight song lyrics and cross out all other letters. Be careful! Some lines don’t contain any lyrics!
By the time you reach the bottom of the word search, you should have all the song lyrics highlighted in order! Sing through the song once more before sharing a brief testimony.
For a spiritual tie-in, you can share that the restoration of the priesthood is similar to the word search! The priesthood was taken (hidden) from the earth after Jesus Christ and His apostles died, but Heavenly Father brought the priesthood back to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith. Now, we can clearly see and access many blessings from Heavenly Father through the priesthood.
Extension Activities:
- Look for key words from the song first – “Priesthood,” “Restored,” “Truths,” “Known,” “Man,” “Spoken,” “Power.” Once you’ve located these words are in the puzzle, look for all the other words! Finding the big words first should make it a little bit easier!
- Print enough copies for each class to have their own puzzle. Race to see which class can find all the song lyrics in the puzzle first!
- Cut the puzzle into horizontal strips and arrange them randomly on the board. As you sing, put them in the correct order by finding the song lyrics!
- For another way to include Junior primary children, print pictures for key words in the song like Priesthood, Truth, Man, Spoken, Earth, Power. Each time you find one of these words in the puzzle, have them choose the picture that matches!
