Shine On Egg Shakers
I’m so excited to share this egg shaker pattern with you! For this activity, we’ll be following a rhythm pattern that uses just 4 actions to pair with this upbeat primary song!
This living music singing time idea is the perfect way to incorporate instruments in primary this week! If you don’t already have a set of egg shakers for primary, we share all about our favorite brands AND teach you how to make your own in this DIY Egg Shakers post.
This egg shaker pattern works great with both the first and second verses of this song! Begin by singing through one verse and the chorus before introducing this activity. If you don’t already have a copy of this Shine On flip chart for this song, grab the lyrics to make for an easier review!
Then, bring out an egg shaker and do two steady shakes for the words, “My light.” As you sing, “is but a little one” toss your egg shaker gently from one hand to the other. You’ll be repeating this pattern for the next two lines as well! As you sing, “For it was lighted” switch to a fast shake and tap your palm on the word, “There.”
Did you catch the pattern? Let’s try it together! Pass out egg shakers to each class as you post the verse pattern on the board. Follow along with the visuals and try out the pattern a few times together!

Are you ready to add the chorus? For the chorus, we’ll just be using two actions that we’ve already done in this song before! Quickly tap your palm as you sing the word, “shine,” and then switch to a fast shake as you sing, “On.”
Repeat this pattern each time you sing, “Shine on!” As you sing the phrase, “Shine on bright and clear,” as well as the last line of the song, tap your palm 4 times.
Once you’ve tried the chorus together a few times, try out the entire egg shaker pattern and have some fun reviewing this song!

Egg shaker Rhythm Pattern:
This pattern is oh, so simple with just 4 easy actions to learn! I’ve outlined the pattern for the verse and chorus below, but be sure to grab the full printable versions for visuals to help your primary children follow the pattern with ease.
Egg Shaker Verse Pattern:
- Steady Shake (2 times): “My light,” and “But lo!”
- Small Toss to Other Hand: “But a little one,” “Of faith and prayer,” and “Like God’s great sun”
- Fast Shake: “For it was lighted”
- Tap Palm: “There”
Egg Shaker Chorus Pattern:
- Tap Palm: “Shine”
- Fast Shake: “On”
- Tap Palm (4 times): “Shine on bright and clear,” and “Now the day is here.”

Extension Activities:
- Have one side of the room sing and do the actions for the verse and have the other side do the chorus. Switch roles each time you repeat the song!
- Focus on keywords in the song by choosing an action for each reference to light. For example, you could do a fast shake each time you sing, “Shine” and do a steady shake on words like “Light,” “Sun,” and “Lighted.”
- Split the class into 4 groups – one for each egg shaker action. Have each group do their assigned action for a fun popcorn singing effect! This makes for a great 4 corners activity – rotate to a new action each time you sing the song.
- Make it a partner pattern and toss to a friend and swap shakers throughout the song.
