Testimony is one of the featured songs to teach in June from the Book of Mormon Primary Songs list. It’s a great one to teach, if you have the time, to focus on developing and recognizing a testimony.

Testimony Hymn Riddles
Using riddles in singing time can be a fun way to introduce a new song in primary! Putting a silly riddle or code up on the board is a sure way to get your primary kids engaged right off the bat.
At the beginning of singing time, post the first riddle for the word, “Testimony” on the board. This riddle tells us the name of the song we’ll be singing in primary today! Can you solve the riddle?
Give the kids a few minutes to think about the riddle. To simplify the riddle, break it down into its 3 parts. What’s another word for quiz? A test! Then, we add the letter “I.” Lastly, we have the word “Pony” but with an “M.” Can you guess it?
You guessed it! It’s Testimony! We’re going to learn a new song about testimonies. Post the first page of the lyrics with the blank. Uh oh! It looks like we have another missing word. Let’s look at our riddle and see if we can solve it.
Tape the next riddle on the board while the pianist quietly plays the song. Let the children work together or individually to see if they can solve for the missing word.
Once you have solved the riddle, sing the first two lines and have the kids repeat after you. Are you ready for the last riddle?
Post the second page of lyrics along with the third riddle. This is a picture riddle! See if you can correctly figure out the phrase, then sing it together.
Now that we have solved all the riddles, we can try singing the entire song! Sing through the song once again. This might be a good time to bring out our Testimony Hymn flipchart with some visuals to help as you teach the verse.
If you have already started learning this song, use these riddles to help your primary kids remember some key words for the first verse! You can also come up with your own silly riddles as a fun way to practice additional verses.

I’ve created 3 riddles to solve for the first verse of this song! You’ll find each of these riddles in the printable later in this post.
You’ll notice that the first two riddles have some picture clues and the last riddle is a picture riddle! The picture clues are great because they make this activity a little more accessible for younger primary kids who don’t read yet.
Riddle #1: Another word for Quiz + I + Pony, but with an “M”
Answer: Testimony! (TEST + I + MONY) – picture clue: exam paper & horse
This is a riddle for the title of the song! It’s a little tricky because the word, “Testimony” actually doesn’t appear until the last verse of the song!
Riddle #2: To see something happen
Answer: Witness! (In court, a witness is someone who actually saw the event take place) – picture clue: binoculars
Riddle #3: 👨🍼 of my 👻
Answer: Father of my soul! (Picture of a father and picture of a ghost)
This riddle is a picture riddle! Try to solve the riddle by looking at each picture individually. Then, put the phrase together!
Extension Activities:
- Split the class into 3 groups and assign each group a different riddle. Have them work together to solve their riddle. Have them *quietly* write down their answer on a sheet of paper and check it with you. Once each group has solved their riddle, rotate and try a new riddle!
- For a fun way to review, do a silly word swap! Switch out one word per line with a random, silly word. Have the kids find the word that is out of place and replace it with the correct song lyrics. Example: “The witness of the happy ghost, as borne by those who sleep…”
- Quiz the Bishop! Have a member of the Bishopric come into singing time for a few minutes. See if they can solve the riddles, then have the children perform the song for them!
