Help your primary children practice sharing their testimonies with this Testimony Hymn What is a Testimony lesson. As you sing about building and sharing our testimonies, discuss common questions like, “What is a testimony? and “How do I gain a testimony?”
In this post, I’ve included some helpful resources to help your primary children better understand how to develop their own testimonies. As you learn and sing together, have your primary children practice sharing their testimonies with each other!

Testimony Hymn What is a Testimony Activity
This activity is a great way to introduce or review this song about Testimony (archives) in singing time. It works great as both a spiritual connection and people interaction activity.
As you sing about testimonies, it can be helpful to teach your primary children what a testimony is and how to share it. Then, practice by sharing your testimony with a friend in primary!
If you have already started learning this song, start with a quick review using our Testimony printable flip chart. Then, begin a brief discussion by asking the children, “What is a Testimony?”
In the printable later in this post, I have included a few different resources from the Church website about testimonies. Read this brief excerpt from the Gospel Topics section on Testimony that tells us in simple terms what a testimony is.
Then ask, “How can we gain a testimony?” Listen to ideas from your primary children and read aloud some ideas from the article mentioned earlier. You might also want to read the counsel given in Alma 32:27. Remember to keep this discussion brief, no longer than a few minutes.
Then, pass out half sheets of paper and invite your primary children to take a minute or two to write down their testimony. You might encourage them to start with phrases like, “I know…” or “I believe…”
Practice sharing your testimony! To make this a little less scary for your primary kiddos, have them pick a partner or turn to their neighbor to share their testimony. Then, ask for a few volunteers to come up to practice.
Conclude by singing through the song one more time and sharing your own testimony.
Helpful Resources:
As you help your primary children deepen their understanding of this song, here are some resources that may be helpful as you engage in a brief discussion about testimonies and practice sharing with each other.
Printable versions of these resources can be found in the free printable later in this post. You can use some of all of these resources to use during this activity!
What is a Testimony?
I love this brief definition given in the Gospel Topics section of the Gospel Library. It says, “A testimony is a spiritual witness given by the Holy Ghost.” Consider reading this definition or having a child read it aloud to the group.
How Do I Gain a Testimony?
Again, this explanation comes from the Gospel Topics section and provides several ways we can build and nourish our testimonies.
“Testimony grows gradually through experiences… It grows as individuals show willingness to serve in the Church and to study, pray, and learn. It increases as individuals obey God’s commandments. Testimony grows as it is shared.”
Alma 32:27
If you want to also include a scripture about testimony, this verse in Alma is a great one to read together:
“If ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.”
Testimony Practice:
As part of this activity, have your primary children practice sharing their testimonies with each other. You may find it helpful to have them take a few minutes to write their testimony on a piece of paper. Write some helpful sentence starters on the board, like “I know…” or “I believe…”
If your primary kids are having a hard time thinking about what to include in their testimony, I’ve created a list of possible topics. This is by no means an all-inclusive list. Our testimonies are personal and always growing. Here are some topics that might be simple for primary children to share about:
- The Godhead – Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost
- Families
- Scriptures
- Temples
- Prayer
- Primary
Extension Activities:
- For younger primary children who don’t read or write yet, invite them to simply draw a picture of something they have a testimony of, like temples, families, primary, etc. Have a few children share what they drew to provide a foundation for building testimonies.
- Post the 3 quotes around the room. Each time you repeat the song, have a child pick one of the quotes and read it aloud to strengthen understanding of this song.
- Listen to a few short clips of apostles and prophets sharing their testimonies. You can also find and cut out testimonies from the end of General Conference talks. Read these together to provide some examples of what bearing your testimony sounds like.
- This talk from Elder Gary E. Stevenson provides some great insights into how to develop and share your testimony. Read excerpts from this talk together as you learn about testimonies.
- Give a challenge to your primary kids to share their testimony at your next ward testimony meeting!
