For a one of a kind way to “get to know” the current day prophets and apostles, you’ll love this We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet Watercolor singing time idea!
The Primary children will all get a chance to help color in the different apostles while you get to add in lots of song repetition to help the kids learn this hymn.

We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet Watercolor
To get started with this activity, first sing through We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet with this Flip Chart.
Introduce the prophet or apostle you are going to watercolor. You can pick current day prophets, ancient prophets, include Joseph Smith, or whichever pictures best fit the current Come Follow Me Primary year.
I found tons of resources on the church website to help you get started with coloring pages that can fit your lesson plan! See all the links right below this section.
Now, just have 2-5 helpers come up front and color in your pictures while the rest of the Primary sing through the song. Try to include as many children as you can so everyone will get a chance in the rotation!
After you’ve finished coloring the pictures you’ve added, now it’s time to add water! You could mix it up and have some fun by having everyone singing now try singing with their best “underwater” voice! Just use one finger and rub up and down on your lips while you sing. The kids will love it!
Fun extension ideas:
- Mix up the apostles on the board and see how many they can name!
- In a smaller Primary you can have each child color in one picture and then put them all up on the board at the end! Just let the kids color while you walk around the room and sing with them.
- Hang all of your apostle pictures up on a side bulletin board to show them off each week in Primary!
- Share a quote or thought from the recent General Conference that goes with each of your current day apostles.

Coloring Pages & Watercolor Supplies
Here you’ll find some resource to help you get started using this activity in your Primary! First, what supplies you’ll likely want to pickup. And then, a link to our favorite prophet coloring pages on LDS.org. I’d love to hear which pictures you picked!
Watercolor Pencils Set – This is an easy NO MESS way to bring watercolors into your Primary room! Just color with colored pencils, then use water to help blend the colors and transform the art into a watercolor painting!
9×12 Watercolor Paper – You’ll want to use watercolor paper to efficiently work with watercolor pencils or paints. It’s a thicker paper like a cardstock but it’s made to be able to absorb water and made for art projects!
Kids Paintbrushes – You’ll need a good medium sized paintbrush to transform the watercolor pencils into a watercolor painting. This set gives a good variety of sizes to fit different pictures you might choose to paint!
LDS Prophet Coloring Pages:
Use any of these 3 links to pick out which prophets to include from current day to Old Testament times or even Joseph Smith’s portrait as a coloring page.
