Try to decode the first word of the mad gab. 2 Knee+Fi See+R = “To Nephi seer”. When they’ve cracked the code, have them repeat the answer back to you together, then sing that line together.

Now, move on to cracking the second line of the puzzle. Of old+en time a = “of olden time a”. Say then sing the line and start from the beginning and sing both lines. Building one line at a time like this is a great way to add in repetition and help the children memorize the song line by line.

Continue on with the rest of the lines of the song as you decode, say, and sing each line.

Extension Activities:

  • Pass out one of the mad gab picture strips to the children. There are 25 from the first verse and chorus. You can split those and do just the verse or just the chorus in a smaller Primary or pass out two per child. Have the children stand on their word while you sing through the song! This would be best for senior Primary.
    • Ask the children before you begin to raise their hand if they need help decoding their words. Now, try to popcorn sing!
    • The kids will sing only their word one time through for a fun sprinkle effect. You’ll need to sing all the little words (black words on the chart).

    • Hi Belinda, I’m aware of and have rebus puzzles on my website! But Rebus has two meanings – one that is considered “positive” which is a picture puzzle clue to be solved like I used for my Baptism activity and another where it’s just word replacement (bumble bee for the word “be”). Word replacements get a bad wrap in the Primary circles as being confusing. This isn’t really intended as a traditional Rebus where the kids would read it and rely on it as a learning tool like word replacements in a flip chart. It’s intended more like a mad gab game where the phrase (in this case pictures rather than words – but the same concept) is read out loud. Because of the way I intended for it to be used, I felt Mad Gab was a better title for its use.

Either way you decide to call it, I hope your Primary has fun with this activity!
