To Think About Jesus Crack the Code

Have you ever used this type of activity in singing time? Your primary children will love it! The basic idea of a ‘Crack the Code’ activity is to create a simple “code” that represents the rhythm or lyrics in a song. You might use numbers, shapes, or symbols to create your code.

For this song in particular, I’ve created a simple code with symbols to represent key words in the first verse and chorus. I looked for words that appear often in this song and chose simple symbols to represent each word or word type. I’ve included a few examples, as well as a full printable code later in this post.

This activity works great for both Senior and Junior primary children! Since there aren’t any words to read, your younger children may appreciate the more visual approach to the song. Of course, you Senior primary children will be so excited to show you how smart they are!

Before introducing this activity, start by singing through To Think About Jesus (flipchart here!). I always like to start with a quick review so that everyone is on board and ready to sing!

Then, post the first page of the code. What do all these symbols mean? Can you help me solve this code? Sing through the song again as the kids look more carefully at the code.

Does anyone know what the squares might mean? How about the hearts? Take a few guesses, then sing it again to see if you are correct! It may be easier to start with one symbol at a time.

Once the children have solved for each symbol, post the rest of the code on the board and continue singing together! If the kids have a hard time following the code, write a few of the words under each symbol to provide some extra clues. You could also choose volunteers to come up and write the correct word under each symbol.

Code:

When you read the lyrics of this song, you’ll notice that there’s lots of repetition! Phrases like, “it shouldn’t be hard” are repeating multiple times throughout the verse. There are 4 different types of symbols in this pattern. Each symbol represents a key word or phrase from the first verse and chorus.

I’ve outlined the full code below to give you an idea of how this code works. Be sure to grab the full code in the printable later in this post.

  • ⬆️= Reverence (Phrases like “sit very still”)
  • = Jesus (“Jesus” or “his”)
  • 🟩= Hard
  • 🟠= Other Words

Examples:

🟠🟠🟠🟩🟠⬆️ = “It shouldn’t be hard to sit very still.”

🟠💭🟠❤️❤️✝️🟠🟠🟠 = “and think about Jesus, His cross on the hill.”

Extension Activities:

  • Split the class into three groups, one for each symbol. Have everyone sing the orange words. Then, rotate and have each group sing a different keyword! Another option is to pass out one page of the code to each group and have each group sing only their assigned page.
  • Pair each symbol with a fun action! For example, you might clap on all the circles, pat your head for each square, fold arms for reverence, and give yourself a hug for all the hearts!
  • Choose one symbol each time you sing and stay silent or hum each time this key word appears in the song.
  • For an extra challenge, cut out each phrase into word strips. Have the children solve for each phrase. Mix up the word strips and put them in the correct order as you sing!
