Have you picked out your songs yet for the year? I asked in a Primary Survey of the Book of Mormon Song Picks for music leaders this year and I got a lot of awesome responses! This post will be the compiling of the survey results.
The results here are not meant to replace your own inspiration and guidance as you pick out the songs for your own Primary. It’s more just for interesting and informational purposes. And, the reason I asked, was to help me as I focus my efforts this year on planning teaching ideas and resources to help music leaders!
With that — let’s dive right in! Here are the top Book of Mormon song picks for 2024!
Book of Mormon January Songs
- Book of Mormon Stories
- Keep the Commandments
- The Iron Rod
The top pick of song to teach in January is Book of Mormon Stories with 67% of respondents planning to teach this song. The second most popular pick is The Iron Rod with 56% of respondents planning to teach this song.
Why the overlap? Some music leaders will include both songs!
Other song picks included: The Tree of Life, An Angel Came to Joseph Smith, He Prepares a Way, Liken the Scriptures, The Golden Plates, Book of the Book of Mormon, The Liahona, I Will Be What I Believe and more! *See “Other” songs stats at the end of the post.
I’ll compile all the “Other” songs stats at the end of the post – so watch for that to see compiled stats of the favorite alternate songs being taught this year!
Book of Mormon February Songs
- Nephi’s Courage
- I Feel My Savior’s Love
- Choose the Right Hymn
The top pick of song to teach in February is Nephi’s Courage with 93% of respondents planning to teach this song. The second most popular pick was I Feel My Savior’s Love with 27% of respondents planning to teach this song.
Other song picks included: The Iron Rod (from January’s list), The Golden Plates, Choose the Right Way, I Love to See the Temple, and others from additional artists!
Book of Mormon March Songs
- I Love to See the Temple
- When I Am Baptized
- Easter Hosanna
The top pick of song to teach in February is I Love to See the Temple with more than half of all music leaders planning to teach this song. The second most popular pick, following closely behind, was Easter Hosanna with 42% of respondents planning to teach this song.
Other song picks included: The Miracle, Teach Me About the Temple, Gethsemane, Their Mother’s Knew
Book of Mormon April Songs
- A Child’s Prayer
- Have I Done Any Good?
The top pick of song to teach in April is A Child’s Prayer with 58% of respondents planning to teach this song. There were only two song picks for this month, and the results look pretty split with not a ton of overlap between the two songs this month. 43% of respondents plan to teach Have I Done Any Good? hymn this month.
Other song picks included: As a Child of God, Come Unto Christ, Behold Your Little Ones, and a focus on teaching a Mother’s Day song
Book of Mormon May Songs
- Love One Another
- I Will Be Valiant
- Help Me, Dear Father
The top pick of song to teach in May will be I Will Be Valiant with just over half of music leaders planning to teach this song. The next most popular pick was Love One Another with 39% of music leaders selecting this song.
Other song picks included: I Know That My Savior Loves Me, The Family is of God, and a focus on Father’s day songs to teach.
Book of Mormon June Songs
- Testimony Hymn
- We’ll Bring the World His Truth
- Follow the Prophet
The top pick of song to teach in June is We’ll Bring the World His Truth with 56% of respondents planning to teach this song. The second most popular pick was Testimony hymn with 39% of music leaders planning to teach this song.
Other song picks included: I Will Be What I Believe, FSY Medley, Go & Do Youth Song
Book of Mormon July Songs
- I Want to Be a Missionary Now
- My Heavenly Father Loves Me
- Faith
The top pick of song to teach in July is My Heavenly Father Loves Me with 56% of music leaders planning to teach this song. The next most popular pick close behind was I Want to Be a Missionary Now with 46% of respondents planning to teach this song.
Other song picks included: I Hope They Call Me on a Missionary, Pioneer Songs, and I Hope They Call Me on a Mission.
Book of Mormon August Songs
- As I Search the Holy Scriptures Hymn
- Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth Hymn
August had an interesting sharp decline in song votes. About 20% of music leaders did not vote for one of the songs this month. The decrease continue with less responses through the final few months, with November having the least responses to the song month picks.
I would imagine some just haven’t picked songs this far in advance while others will begin preparing for their Primary Program in August and then on to Christmas song picks for the last few months of the year.
The stats here are still percentage based according to all responses received, but keep that earlier information in mind that some are opting not to teach a new song this month.
The top pick of song to teach in August is As I Search the Holy Scriptures with 63% of total responses planning to teach this song. Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth received much fewer votes with only 38% of responses planning to teach this song.
Other song picks included: Search, Ponder and Pray (December’s list), Love at Home, Small and Simple Faith, and a couple of comments (placed under other) that they would be reviewing songs instead.
Book of Mormon September Songs
- The Still Small Voice
- Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus
- I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus
The top pick of song to teach in September is Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus with 63% of respondents planning to teach this song. It’s nice to have a Christmas song already selected for us that ties in so nicely this month! The second most popular pick is I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus with 43% of respondents planning to teach this song.
Only 6% of responses had an alternate song pick listed for September. Other song picks included: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man, This is My Beloved Son, and Jesus Said Love Everyone with some other monthly song picks also included.
Book of Mormon October Songs
- Families Can Be Together Forever
- The Church of Jesus Christ
This month included several specific comments that this month would be review and/or Program month! I’ve removed those responses from the other category as they won’t be teaching any new songs.
The top pick of song to teach in October was Families Can Be Together Forever by a high margin of 71% of music leaders planning to teach this song. The Church of Jesus Christ song was also a popular pick to include this month with 50% of respondents planning to include this song.
Other song picks included: I Believe in Christ and Dare to Do Right from November’s list and A Child’s Prayer (April’s list)
Book of Mormon November Songs
- Dare to Do Right
- I Believe in Christ Hymn
The top pick of song to teach in November was I Believe in Christ with 57% of music leaders planning to teach this song. Dare to Do Right also received a high number of responses with 52% of respondents planning to include this song in November.
Other song picks are back up this month as we head into Christmas planning. Other song picks included: Thanksgiving and Christmas songs dominate the other song selections, specifically Thankful and A Book of Mormon Christmas.
Book of Mormon December Songs
- Search, Ponder and Pray
- Away in a Manger
- He Sent His Son
And, finally December’s song picks. I was a little surprised by this month’s results with a Christmas song in the mix that didn’t receive quite as many votes as I would have expected.
The top pick of song to teach in December is Away in a Manger with 47% of music leaders planning to teach this song. Both other two songs were close behind with 45% planning to include He Sent His Son and 39% planning to teach Search, Ponder and Pray.
Other song picks included: This month’s other song selections included all Christmas songs! Some popular picks included: Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus (September’s list), Picture a Christmas, Born to Be a King, and Shepherd’s Carol.
Other Book of Mormon Song Picks
There were a LOT of other awesome Book of Mormon song selections included as “other” comments or left as a note to me at the end of the survey as additional songs that music leaders plan to teach this year.
I’ve compile these into a visual graph, just to help showcase them all, though the numbers listed are only marginally helpful. There were a total of 110 respondents to the survey so 15 votes represents 13%, for reference.
Because the numbers aren’t super helpful, I’ve just listed them in order of how many times mentioned and their number count. Additional songs that were mentioned 1-2 times are included below.
In the future – I’ll start with an others thread with some popular song picks already filled in to help the results be a little more stable overall, but it’s still interesting to look at so I’ll include all of those song picks here!

A Quick Note About Statistics & Comments
There were several great explanation comments left that helped with the insights for this post as well.
For example, some music leaders might teach the songs from a specific song’s month, but not in that given month. That’s how I planned my teaching too – mixing up my song picks from the month across the whole year to include each song in more than one month. It’s a great way to spend more time with each song while adding in variety during any given month.
Other comments included that they weren’t positive and will watch for new songs that come out or that they discover throughout the year to add to or swap with one of the suggested song list titles.
Of course, many of the plans are tentative at this point and subject to change, but it’s a great starting point to help you pick out your own songs for the year, too!
