I am so excited to teach I Will Walk With Jesus this year in singing time. I typically try to stick with the songs in the Primary Songbook and introduce 1-2 songs from the Friend magazine each year.
This year, I think I’ll use this song as a special musical number for the Senior primary, but it can definitely be a great song for Junior primary too!
Okay… now let’s be honest. Many of us have used some form of the “Oh no! I dropped all my pictures (or words)” in singing time. It’s such a classic activity that can be very effective.
I personally love this activity because it helps the children use their problem-solving skills in a way that helps them work through the words of the song. This month, I’ll be using this Dropped Pictures activity to help bring some fun while we practice this beautiful song.
For this activity, all you’ll need is a set of pictures for this song. I recommend using this I Will Walk With Jesus Flipchart because you can use it for the activity and for learning the song!
How to Play I Will Walk With Jesus Dropped Pictures in Singing Time
The idea for this activity is pretty simple. If you have already started learning this song, you will probably have your I Will Walk with Jesus flip chart sheets ready to go. When you come into primary, bring in the pictures and pretend to drop the pictures on the floor when you come in.
You can be as dramatic or as mellow as you want (You’ll get lots of laughter for the first option!) Once the pictures are on the floor, you might have some kiddos try to help you pick them up.
When you have all the pictures back, you might say something like, “These pictures are all mixed up. Can you help me put them in order for primary?” Work together as a class to put the words back in order and practice the song again!
My 7 year old came in while I was making this activity and he started immediately singing along so I put him to the test! He had a lot of fun putting the pictures in order and singing along!
How to Play:
- Start by reviewing I Will Walk With Jesus.
- Then, bring out your flipchart for this song and *accidentally* drop all the pages on the floor.
- Invite a few children to come help you pick up the pages.
- Once you have all the pages, notice that the pages are all mixed up. Invite the kids to help you rearrange the pages so that they are in the right order.
- Each time you put a new page in order, sing one verse of the song!
I like to use what I already have to make this activity super easy. For this activity, I’ll be using the flip chart for this song because it has some nice pictures and large text.
Since the text is meant to fit in as few pages as possible, this only leaves you with 4 pages to rearrange.
If you need more pages, you might choose to cut each page in half so that you can still see all the words but have more pages to use. Just an idea!
I’ve also added 2 additional options below to make it more flexible if the condensed flip chart is too few of pages for what you’re looking for. This option is 8 pages with splits at each of the natural breaking points.
- Use another piece of paper or turn one page over to see if you can sing without some of the words! Have children choose different pages of the song to turn over.
- Speedy Fast! Give each class their own set of pages (you could print them in black & white to save on ink). See which class can rearrange the words the fastest!
- Make a mini sorting activity by printing 4 flip chart pages per paper. To do this click print, and when the settings menu opens choose “Multiple”. This will allow you to print several PDF pages per paper. Then just select the pages you want to print. This might be a good idea for a class sorting activity.
