When We’re Helping Act It Out!
The idea behind this activity is pretty simple. Just act out the song! Since this song is about serving in the home, there are many different ways to act it out!
For this activity, divide the class into 4 groups and have each group work together to act out one line of the song! Add in some props for a simple & fun singing time idea!
Before primary, prepare a basket with some props that could be used to act out the song. You could grab some household cleaning items (broom, dust pan, duster, towel, etc). I have a list below with prop ideas for each line of the song.
Review When We’re Helping at the beginning of singing time. I love how simple this song is! Since it’s so short, it’s a great one to combine with another song of the month! You can find the full list of 2023 Come Follow Me New Testament Songs here.
How could we act out this song? What props might we need? Have the kids share some ideas about how to act out the song. This is a great way to get some ideas rolling before splitting the class into groups.
We’re going to act out the song one line at a time! Split the class into 4 groups. Print out the lyrics to each line and pass one line to each class.
Set a timer for 3-5 minutes and have each group work together to prepare a short skit to act out their line of the song.
Then, have each class act out their line! Have them lead the class in singing their line! Sing through the entire song after all the performances are finished.
Group #1: First line of the song: “When we’re helping, we’re happy.”
Group #2: Second line of the song: “And we sing as we go”
Group #3: Third line of the song: “And we like to help mother”
Group #4: Fourth line of the song: “For we all love her so.”
Althought props are not necessarily required for this activity, it may be a good idea to bring in some props for your primary children to use. You can give a small basket to each group with props for their specific line, or just have one big basket for everyone to share. Here are some ideas for props to bring in from home!
- Broom/Dust Pan
- Scrubbie/Wash cloth
- Primary Music Book
- Conducting Baton
- Mixing Bowl
- Paper for cut out hearts
- Teddy bear
- Create a simple script for the kids to act out. Think of this like a song story that the kids can act out. Add in pauses to sing a phrase of the song. You can also sing the entire song in between each section.
- Think of different silly ways to sing the song. Some examples include: sing like a cowboy, march in place, sing like a robot. Write one example per piece of paper and tape them to the props. Pick a prop and sing how the paper indicates!
- Take turns acting out different parts of the song! Tape each page to a corner of the room. Have groups start in one corner, then move to another corner to act out a different line of the song!
- Give each group the coordinating symbols only. Can they figure out which line is theirs? Can the Primary crack which group is which from their acting?
