For this activity, I’ve chosen keywords from the first verse of the hymn, As I Search the Holy Scriptures (archives) and created a simple code for your primary children to solve! Hide the keywords around the room and have some fun with this logical conclusion singing time idea!

As I Search the Holy Scriptures Seek & Find
Studying the scriptures can be a challenge when there is so much unfamiliar language! Even if we don’t understand every word, there are many resources to help us better understand the meaning of words, phrases, and symbols in the scriptures.
For a fun way to review this song, hide keywords around the room and try to figure out where each keyword goes in the song! If you come across any unfamiliar words, work together to better understand their meaning!
How to Play:
I’ve created a simple printable with seek & find code pages and keyword strips from the song. Before primary, cut out all the word strips and tape them around the room. Hide word strips under chairs, near the piano, on the wall, or any other sneaky spots you can find!
When your primary children come in, they will likely spot some word strips right away! Remind the children to leave any papers they may find for now.
Start with a quick review of the song by singing through the first verse of As I Search the Holy Scriptures (lyrics here).
Then, post all 4 pages of the seek & find puzzle on the board. Hmm, these papers look a bit strange! What might these dots mean? What do the brackets mean?
Try singing through the song again and see if your primary kids can figure out that the dots represent easy words (syllables) in the song and the brackets represent big words in the song!
Once they’ve figured out the pattern, see if they can begin finding which keywords belong on each page. For Junior primary kiddos, you may want to start with one page at a time.
For a spiritual tie-in, explain that we sometimes might not understand the meaning of big words in the scriptures. How can we improve our understanding of these words? Discuss together ways that we can increase our understanding of difficult language in the scriptures.
Look around the room for keywords while you listen to or sing the song. Once you’ve placed all the correct keywords in the song, sing through the song one more time!
Seek & Find Code:
I’ve created a simple “code” for this seek & find activity. In the printable lesson plan, you’ll notice that each page contains only dots and brackets. Where did all the lyrics go? The brackets on each page represent larger keywords in the song, and all the dots represent all the other words/syllables in the song.
Here’s a breakdown of the seek & find code for this song with italicized keywords:
1. .. [ ] … [ ] = As I search the holy scriptures,
2. [ ] … [ ] = Loving father of makind,
3. …. [ ] . [ ] = May my heart be blessed with wisdom,
4. .. [ ] … = And may knowledge fill my mind.
Extension Activities:
- Practice using scripture resources for big words by looking up each of the keywords in the Bible Dictionary or Topical Guide. Assign 1-2 words to each class and have them see what additional insights they can find.
- For a simpler version of this activity, write or type out all the song lyrics, then omit the keywords you want to use. This eliminates the dots & brackets and makes it a little easier for the kids to figure out where the keywords go.
- Type out all the words to the song and tape them all around the room! Starting with the first line, see if you can find all the lyrics and put them in the correct order on the board!
- Choose an action to do each time you sing a keyword! Alternatively, you can hum all the “dot” words and sing only the keywords in the song!
