This activity will have the kids eagerly listening and attentive as you draw their attention to a variety of sounds and engage one of there senses. Then, tie it all in with a meaningful connection to the song, Choose the Right Way for an object lesson that will stick with the kids.

Choose the Right Way Warning Sounds Object Lesson - This engaging idea for LDS Primary Music Leaders or for use in the home will help you connect the lesson plan with your audience in a meaningful way!

Choose the Right Way
Warning Sounds

We’ll start by singing through Choose the Right Way.

Then, for this activity, I’ll gather several different short audio clips. I’ll ask the children to listen closely and tell me what they here.

Some examples of warning/danger sounds you might include could be:

  • Thunder Storm
  • Fire
  • Busy City
  • Earthquake

After listening to a couple of “dangerous” sounds, we’ll talk about how sounds impact us. Can sounds be a warning to us? How do they warn us? Why is it important to listen for those warnings?

Gentle sounds could include:

  • Stream
  • Beach
  • Gentle Rain
  • Baby Sleeping

I’ll tie in how in everyday life we can find different warning and comforting sounds, too. Maybe a small prompting from the Spirit that tells us what we need to do. Or a friend or leader who helps answer a question. The prophet’s voice also helps give us both a warning and a comforting voice.

How can we use our senses, like our ability to hear, to help us choose the right way?

This whole activity going through the sounds and discussion should only take about 3 minutes, then we’ll sing the song through. I ask the kids if they recognized anything the song talks about that can be a helper to use in choosing the right. (the Teachings of Jesus). Then, what are some ways we can hear his teachings? (church, FHE, home study, conference.. etc).

We’ll sing through the song one more time.

Come, Follow Me Lesson Tie-in:

Finally, I’ll tie in the activity to this week’s gospel study lesson. We’ll read together: 1 Corinthians 2:9-10

9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard,
neither have entered into the heart of man, the things
which God hath prepared for them that love him.

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for
the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

This scripture teaches us that God is so willing to give to us inspiration and answers to any of our questions. The Prophet himself even said during this past April’s conference that he is just waiting to reveal the mysteries to us, if we will just ask.

President Monson also gave us a warning, and a pleading, saying: “In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost. … Choose to do the spiritual work required to enjoy the gift of the Holy Ghost and hear the voice of the Spirit more frequently and more clearly.”

We can actively invite the Holy Ghost to whisper to us in our lives by listening for the still small voice and carefully choosing the right every day.

I’ll also encourage the kids to share this object lesson with their families during home study!

What other ideas do you have that could work well with this lesson plan?
