Choose to Serve the Lord Four Corners

I love that this song teaches about faithful individuals from the scriptures in a relatable way. We can learn so much from the faith and courage of our scripture heroes! As you teach this song in primary, move around the room and focus on one scripture hero at a time.

I remember playing Four Corners in elementary school! The basic idea is to have one person stand in the middle and close their eyes while everyone else picks a corner. Then, the person in the middle chooses a corner and those people are out!

This four corners activity is a little twist on the classic game, with a few modifications. For this activity, the primary children will try a fun new action for each scripture hero as they rotate around the room.

I’ve created posters for each scripture hero mentioned in the song. Simply print out all 4 scripture hero posters and tape one in each corner of the room beforehand.

Before introducing the activity, grab a copy of our Choose to Serve the Lord flip chart and sing through the first verse at the beginning of singing time.

Then, have everyone stand and pick a corner. Who has Queen Esther? Have all the children in the corner with Queen Esther raise their hand up high! Go through all 4 corners to make sure the kids know which corner they are in.

Sing through the song again, pointing to one corner at a time, with each group singing only the lines that correspond with their scripture hero.

Then, have the kids rotate to a new corner and sing a different section of the song!

Are you ready for a challenge? Let’s add the movements! Queen Esther taught us to ‘stand’ for the right. Jump up high! Sway side to side to remember that angels are by our sides.

Be strong like David! Can you flex your muscles? Deborah taught us to bring our friends to Christ. Clap hands with a partner!

There are two ways to use the movements – you can either have each corner do only the actions for their scripture hero. Or, go through each hero one at a time and have all the children do the movements together.

Either way, this activity is a great way to get those wiggles out by moving around the room.

Four Corners Actions:

This list includes one action for each scripture hero in the first verse of this song. Each action hints at what we learn from that scripture hero. Can you think of more fun actions that correlate with each individual’s story?

• Elisha – Side Sway
• David – Flex muscles
• Deborah – Partner Claps

Extension Activities:

• Pick a volunteer to stand in the middle of the room and close their eyes and count to 10 while everyone picks a corner. If your corner is chosen, sit down and sing through the song once. Continue until everyone is back in their seats!
• Bring some simple costumes to bring each scripture hero to life! Some examples might include: paper crowns, plastic swords, robes, skirts,  scriptures, etc.)
• Find a scripture about each person mentioned in the song. Have each group read about their scripture hero, then teach the class!
• If you don’t have enough room or don’t want everyone up at once, simply hold up one poster at a time. Focus on one scripture hero and do the action while singing that part of the song.  Then, pick a new section to focus on. This is a less interactive, but easy way to simplify the activity.
