I’m loving this deep dive into outer space with a series of Astronomy Pictures as an object lesson to connect the children with the song Every Star is Different in Primary (archives)!
I had so much fun creating these slideshows with pictures of space and exploring how big the known universe is to us, and there is certainly so much more beyond the vast edges of space that we are able to observe! That’s how powerful and amazing our Heavenly Father is!

Every Star is Different Astronomy Picture Lesson
I once came across this post on Facebook that showed a comparison view that started with our view of earth, then to the moon and its distance, then zooming out to the Sun to see how small the Earth and moon where, and it continued to just zoom out and out.

I was in awe and shared the lesson with my youth Sunday School class a week or two later. I couldn’t find that original post but tried to recreate a similar lesson here to showcase that of all God’s vast and endless creations, his children are his most precious and important. I think this lesson ties in beautifully with the message of this song!
Sing through Every Star is Different (flip chart here) once, before starting this slideshow. Display the images on a TV if you can to save your printer! Or you can print if you’d like.

Flip through the first few slides of the astronaut, space shuttle, and looking out to the moon. Ask the children: How large is the moon compared to you? How big does the moon look at night? Today I want to share with you how big the universe is as we sing through our song. We’re just so small in comparison to the expanse of space. Let’s sing super whisper singing! Sing through the song again.
Flip through the next 3 slides. The moon is pretty big, don’t you think? Let’s see what the earth looks like from the moon. The earth is a lot bigger than the moon! Let’s sing again, this time a little louder!

There’s still a lot of space left! Let’s zoom out and leave the earth and moon to scale out to something even bigger! Flip through the next 3 slides and compare how big Saturn is compared to Earth! Saturn is so big, huh! And it’s still in our solar system. We’re going a lot bigger than that today. Let’s sing again a little louder!

Continue with the next 3 slides about the Sun, then 3 about our galaxy, then 2 about a grouping of galaxies, and then finally 2 slides about us as God’s creation. Sing the song again between each group of slides louder each time!
