Every Star is Different Paper Plates
You will love how fun and easy this paper plates rhythm pattern is! Just grab some paper plates from your pantry or the Dollar Tree and have some fun with this pattern!
As you prep for this activity, make sure you have enough plates for each child to have a set of two.You could also buy different sizes or shapes or paper plates! Seasonal or holiday plates are great for this!
I even chose to decorate my plates with different patterns & shapes on each one for a spiritual tie-in about our uniqueness and worth our to Heavenly Father. Whether you choose to use random assorted plates, decorative plates, or just plain paper plates, you can be sure that this activity will be a hit!
At the beginning of singing time, start by reviewing the first verse and chorus of this cute song. Grab a copy of our Every Star is Different flip chart to help with the lyrics!
Then, pass out paper plates and have the kids try swishing the backs of their plates together. This is our first action. Then, have them alternate tapping each knee with a plate. There’s the other action – just two for this song!
Post the printable visuals on the board to help your primary children remember which rhythm comes first in the pattern!
Alternate between these two rhythms as you sing each line. Start by swishing your plates for the first line, then switch to taps for the second line. Repeat this pattern for the entire verse! For the chorus, you can choose to alternate each line or alternate each phrase!
This paper plates pattern uses just two actions that follow along with the natural rhythm of this primary song. For this pattern, we’ll be alternating between swishes and knee taps. I’ll share some examples below, but be sure to check out the demonstration video below to see this pattern in action!
Starting with the first line of the song, we’ll alternate actions each line of the song. Here’s an example:
- “Every star is different” -Swish
- “and so is ev’ry child” – Tap-Tap
- “Some are bright and happy” -Swish
- ”and some are meek and mild” -Tap-Tap
For the taps, you’ll tap each knee with a plate, then repeat the taps once. This will end up being 4 taps for these lines that align with the emphasized notes.
Extension Activities:
- Have one side of the room do the swishes and the other side do the taps. Have each side sing on their lines. Switch each time you repeat the song!
- Add in some different rhythms for the chorus! For example, you could tap your head or tap across with a partner and make it a partner pattern!
- Have some kids do rhythm solos for a fun way to show our unique individuality! Choose brave volunteers to come up and come up with their own pattern for a few lines of the song. Then, choose someone else to show their pattern!
