Every Star is Different Ribbon Wands
Many kids are movers – they need to move their bodies to stay engaged! This purposeful movement activity is great for just that!
I’ve created a simple ribbon wand pattern with actions that go perfectly with the first verse of this song! Of course, the pattern can be easily adapted for any verse you are teaching!
All you’ll need for this activity is enough ribbon wands for each child in your primary. If you have a larger group, you might consider having the children trade off with a partner. For all things ribbon wands, including how to make your own and our personal recommendations, see this post about DIY Ribbon Wands!

Start by reviewing the first verse and chorus of Every Star is Different. Feel free to grab our Every Star is Different flip chart as you work on the lyrics!
Then, pull out a ribbon wand and begin singing the first line of the song while drawing a big star in the air. Swirl your wand as you sing the second line. This is a great attention-grabber! I recommend doing this BEFORE passing out ribbon wands 😉
Can you try it with me? Pass out the ribbon wands and have the kids sing or say each line as you demonstrate the pattern.
This pattern is super easy to follow because you just use one movement per line. After demonstrating the first 4 lines, try the pattern as you sing just those lines!
Ready for the next 4 movements? Teach the actions for the rest of the verse and try those actions together!

Can you remember the entire pattern? Sing through the verse together as you follow the ribbon wand pattern. Post the visuals on the board to help your primary children remember the pattern!
Then, freestyle for the chorus! Think lots of stars, twinkles in the sky, hearts, etc. Whatever keeps the kids engaged! You can even have the kids come up with their own pattern for the chorus!

Ribbon Wands Verse Pattern:
This simple pattern follows each line of the first verse, with 8 actions total. Since the chorus has so much repetition, I thought it might be fun to leave it up to the kids’ creativity!
Be sure to grab the printable pattern later in this post for colorful visuals that make this pattern super easy to follow!
- Line 1: Star (“Ev’ry star is different”)
- Line 2: Swirl (“And so is ev’ry child”)
- Line 3: Zig Zag Down (“Some are bright and happy”)
- Line 4: Spin (“And some are meek and mild”)
- Line 5: Heart (Ev’ry one is needed”)
- Line 6: Overhead Arch (“For just what he can do”)
- Line 7: Dab Right (“You’re the only person”)
- Line 8: Star “Who ever can be you.”

Extension Activities:
- Split the class into 2 groups. Have one side do the actions for the first 4 lines and have the other side do the actions and sing the last 4 lines of the chorus. Then, switch! Or, alternate singing each line!
- Follow the Leader! Choose a child to come up and lead the group. You could also have a child choose actions for the chorus and have the class follow their movements! Pick a new leader each time you sing through the song!
- For the chorus, grab our ribbon wand action cards and have the kids randomly choose 4 actions from a hat. Use one action for each line of the chorus!
