Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth Ribbon Wands
I definitely recommend adding a set of ribbon wands to your primary toolkit if you have the funds in your primary budget! If you don’t have extra room in the budget this year, you might also consider making your own ribbon wands or simply using your finger as an imaginary wand!
Whether you choose to purchase ribbon wands or make some at home, the result is a super fun prop to use with any primary song! I’ve created this easy-to-follow ribbon wands pattern that will be a sure way to keep your primary kids engaged throughout singing time!
Review the first verse of Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth (flip chart) once before introducing this activity.
Then, pull out your ribbon wand and demonstrate the actions for the first phrase. Sing, “Home can be a heaven on earth” as you draw a simple house shape. Then, draw a heart as you sing “when we are filled with love.”
Did you see what shapes I made? Can you try it with me? Pass out all the ribbon wands and post the first page of the ribbon wands pattern on the board.
Have the children repeat after you as you demonstrate each action for the first four lines of the song. Sing the first four lines together while creating each shape.
Let’s try the second half of the song! Post the second page of the pattern on the board and demonstrate it once for the kids. Then, try it together!
Create a swirl starting from the inside, then do the opposite and create a big swirl starting from the outside. Create a large “X” with your ribbon wands as you sing the last phrase, “where we want to be.”

Ribbon Wands Pattern:
House –> For this action, simply draw a house by creating a square shape with a triange on top.
*Use this action while singing the first phrase, “Home can be a heaven on earth”
Heart –> Create a big heart shape with your ribbon wand!
*Use this action while singing, “when we are filled with love,”
Smiley Face –> Starting with two dots, draw a simple smiley face.
*Use this action while you sing, “Bringing happiness and joy,”
Squiggle Down –> Do this action by starting with your ribbon wand high in the air and slowly coming down as you create a “squiggle” with your wand.
*Use this action for the line, “rich blessings from above”
Swirl Starting from Inside –> Create a big swirl by starting from the inside and drawing large circles outward.
*Use this action while singing, “Warmth and kindness, charity,”
Swirl Starting from Outside –> This action is the same as above, except this time you’ll start from the outside and move inward!
*Use this action for the line, “Safety and security”
Cloud –> Create a cloud shapes by drawing small curves in a circular shape.
*Use this action while you sing, “Making home a part of heaven”
“X” Marks the Spot –> Make a diagonal line starting with the top left, then make another diagonal line starting from the top right.
*Use this action for the last phrase of the song, “where we want to be.”
Extension Activities:
- Divide the room into two sides. Have one side of the room do the actions for the first two lines of the song and have the other side do the actions for the last two lines. Then, switch!
- Have mini-performances! Split the class into small groups and assign them a few lines of the song. Have each group come up with their own ribbon wand actions and perform for the class!
- If you don’t have ribbon wands, simply pretend you are holding an imaginary crayon. Draw shapes in the air as you sing together!
- Create your own ribbon wand actions for the second or third verse! I recommend just focusing on one verse at a time, but you can use ribbon wands to review any of the verses in this song!
- Grab our set of ribbon wand action cards and randomly choose 8 actions for this song! Start by choosing 4 actions for the first half of the song, then pick 4 more actions for the second half!
