Help Me, Dear Father Be My Mirror

It really doesn’t get any easier than this fun game of “Copy Me!” The basic idea behind this activity is to have a leader and a mirror. The leader’s job is to think of silly or simple actions for the mirror to copy. The mirror’s job, on the other hand, is to see how closely they can follow the leader!

I’ve created a printable with 8 fun mirror actions to use for this game! You don’t need any extra materials besides your imagination!

I like to start any singing time activity with some music. Sing through the first verse and chorus of this short song (Easter Hosanna flip chart here) before introducing this game.

Then, tell the kids, “Let’s pretend there is a large mirror between us! Copy my actions!” Start by simply having the children stand up or copy a simple movement.

Have the kids mirror a few of your actions to practice! Then, add in the song! Have the pianist begin playing the song. As you sing, switch your movements and have the kids follow along!

Once everyone is familiar with the general idea of the game, have them try it! Split the class into pairs and choose one partner to start as the leader and one as the follower.

Continue singing through the song as the children switch off being the leader and the mirror!

For a spiritual tie-in at the end, use this game as an analogy for how we can learn to become more like Jesus Christ. We can “mirror” His character by being kind to others, following Heavenly Father’s commandments, and sharing the gospel.

4 Extension Activities:

  • Choose someone to come up to the front and be the leader. Have the child choose a silly movement from a basket. As you sing, have them pick another movement to mirror!
  • Split the class into small groups of 3-5 children. Choose one person in the group to be the leader and have the rest of the group mirror their actions! Then, call out “Switch” to change leaders.
  • For an even sillier version of this game, try doing opposite actions! If the leader stands up, sit down! If the leader reaches up high, reach down low! If they pat their knees, pat your head!
  •  For a simple way to introduce this activity, have the children mirror the lyrics! Sing or say a phrase, then have the children copy you!
