Help Me, Dear Father Concentration
This concentration game will have your primary children engaged from start to finish! The basic idea behind this activity is to uncover pieces of a picture puzzle during singing time and try to figure out what is happening in the picture!
I’ve included 3 printable pictures that will pair well with this song in the printable later in this post. You’ll also find 2 different background options (scripture verse and song lyrics) to use as you uncover the picture. Before primary, set up for this activity by deciding which pictures and backgrounds you’ll be using.
For this activity, start with one picture. Cut the picture into 6-8 squares, depending on which background you use. Set up the board beforehand by taping your song lyrics or scripture verse on the board with the picture hidden from view.
At the beginning of primary, review the first verse and chorus with this Help Me, Dear Father Flip Chart.
Then, explain to your primary kids that you’ll be solving a picture puzzle! Their job is to see if they can figure out what is happening in the picture.
Choose one child to come up to the board and flip over one square at random. Have them keep their guesses quiet for now and sing through the song again.
Then, pick another child to come up and uncover another piece to the puzzle. Can you tell what is happening in the picture? What is the person doing? Take a few guesses now and see if they are correct!
Continue uncovering the puzzle, then ask: “How does this picture relate to our song?” Invite the children to think about how the picture relates to what you are learning about in the song. Each of these pictures shows an example of someone trying to seek help from Heavenly Father. One picture even shows us what forgiveness can look like!
You might choose to have a short discussion about how we can seek help from Heavenly Father. Ask the children what they do when they are feeling sad, scared, alone, or afraid. We can pray to ask for Heavenly Father’s help, and then open our scriptures to hear his voice.
Share your testimony at the end about seeking for Heavenly Father’s help through prayer and scripture study. I always love to end singing time with a short testimony. What a great way to share the gospel with your primary children!
Extension Activities:
- Divide the class into two groups. Have each group work on one of the concentration puzzles while listening to the song. Once each puzzle is solved, switch puzzles!
- Each time you uncover a piece of the picture, sing through the song. Now some of the lyrics are gone! Hum or stay silent for missing lyrics.
- Try to memorize the scripture reference for this song while you play. Uncover the scripture verse and try to see if you can memorize the words.
