Help Me, Dear Father Singing Bee

This fun review idea comes from our darling singing bee review activity! You’ve likely seen or even done a variation of this activity before. It’s super simple!

For this activity, all you’ll need is an object to pass around during singing time. I’ve created a cute “Singing Bee” printable to pass around as you sing. I’ve also created some simple question cards to add an extra element of fun to this activity. Print out these question cards before singing time.

Before introducing this activity, sing through the first verse and chorus of Help Me Dear Father (lyrics here).

Then, make some silly “buzzing” noises with your lips as you pull out the singing bee! Look who joined us in singing time today! It’s our Singing Bee! She loves to hear all the beautiful music in primary.

Give the singing bee to one child to start. Then, begin singing through the song again. Have your primary pianist randomly stop the music. Who is holding our Singing Bee?

Ask the child holding the bee if they can sing or say the next word in the song. Then, pull out the BUZZ! Cards and read one aloud. These questions are a mix of trivia about the song and fun personal questions. Ask the child one of the questions and listen for their answer.

Then, resume the music and continue passing around the Singing Bee. Try to get through as many turns as you can before singing time is over!

Singing Bee BUZZ! Questions:

I’ve included 9 question cards to use as part of this activity. Some of these questions are “trivia” type questions that come from the song lyrics. Some of the questions are just fun, simple questions to get to know each other better.

I’ve included all the questions below, but be sure to grab the printable cards as you prep for this activity.

  • What is one way you can be “nearer” to Heavenly Father?
  • Jesus taught us that we must forgive who? (Song Lyrics: “All who may seem unkind to me”)
  • What is your favorite primary song?
  • Fill in the Blank: “Help me each day, Father, I…” (Answer: Pray)
  • Tell us one of your favorite scripture stories.
  • What does our song tell us we must do to repent? (Song Lyrics: “Making things right and changing our ways”)
  • What can we do when we feel angry at someone for hurting us?
  • Hum or sing a primary song. Let’s see if we can guess the song!
  • Can you think of a time when you forgave someone?

Extension Activities:

  • All Buzz! Each time the music stops, have everyone call out the next word! Start with a quiet call out, almost a whisper. Then, each time the music stops, have the children get a little bit louder!
  • Have two Singing Bees moving around the room at one time. This can be a great option if you have a larger primary and want to make sure lots of children get a turn.
  • To practice the melody, have the children BUZZ the melody of the next line instead of singing the lyrics each time the music stops.
  •  Create a few smaller circles for this game.  Have a teacher oversee each group and come up with a simple question to ask when the music stops.
The Iron Rod Pass the Iron Rod fun and engaging - plus so easy no-prep singing time idea! Just print this paper iron rod and play a game like hot potato as you pass the iron rod and when the music pauses, say or sing the next word of the song! A great teaching activity for LDS Primary music leader or lesson plan for families!
