I Hope They Call Me On a Mission Memory Game

I have used memory games a few times in primary, and I’m so excited to play this memory game with a missionary twist! For this activity, I’ll be making some homemade memory cards. I have full instructions to make these cards below!

I found 4 pairs of missionary images to use for this game. I chose to use images that represent general missionary service, such as a Book of Mormon and missionary name tag. You could also print out pictures of a world map!

During primary, set up your memory board by using magnets to post the cards on the board. Then, have the children flip over two cards at a time and see if they have a match! Each time someone flips over cards, sing through one of the verses. It’s so much fun!

Supplies for Memory Cards:

  • Pictures of things associated with missionaries and missionary work
  • Multiple pieces of colored cardstock or construction paper
  • Scissors (or a paper cutter)
  • Tape or glue

To make these cute memory cards, start by printing out images of things associated with missionary work. For this activity, I’ll be using pictures of bikes, missionary tags, a baptism scene, and a Book of Mormon. Make sure to make two copies of each picture!

Then, cut out each picture. I prefer to use a paper cutter, but scissors work just fine too! Cut each piece of cardstock in half. Once the pictures are cut out, tape or glue each picture to one of the halves of paper.

You’ll need some magnets to post the memory cards on the whiteboard. You could also put them on the floor, but I’ve found it easier for the kids to flip them on the board. If you want to start simple, just put up 3 of the matches. Then, once the kids have matched all the cards, mix them up and play again with another match!

Activity Instructions:

  1. Before primary, prepare pictures that are representative of missionaries and missionary experiences. For example, you could choose to find pictures of nametags, a world map, or bicycles.
  2. Cut sheets of construction/cardstock paper in halves or quarters.
  3. Print out your pictures and tape them to construction paper to keep the pictures hidden.
  4. At the beginning of primary, use magnets to post all your pictures on the whiteboard with the pictures hidden from the kids.
  5. Review both verses of I Hope They Call Me On a Mission (flipchart here!)
  6. Explain to the children that you’ll be playing memory! Have one child come up to the board and flip over two cards. If the cards show the same picture, keep them facing the class. If the cards do not match, have them turn the cards back over.
  7. Each time you try to make a match, sing through one of the verses again! Continue singing until you’ve paired all the matches!

Extension Ideas:

  • Add some extra fun to the memory game by writing a fun way to sing the song on each memory card. When you turn over the cards to make a match, pick one of the actions written on the cards to use when you sing through the next verse!
  • Give each class their own set of memory cards and see which class can match all the pairs first!
  • Once you’ve paired all the matches, assign each class to a set of pictures (For example, CTR 8 class could the baptism scene). While you sing, hold up a picture and have that class sing the next phrase by themselves!
