I Know that My Redeemer Lives Dance Scarves
If you haven’t used your dance scarves yet this year, it’s time to bring them out for this fun purposeful movement activity! If you’re fairly new to using dance scarves in primary, you’re in the right place!
We love dance scarves for the simplicity and fun they bring to singing time! Need a last-minute activity? Pull out some of our dance scarves action cards. Having a hard time keeping kids engaged during singing time? Try a new pattern!
At the beginning of primary, review the first verse of I Know that My Redeemer Lives. You can grab our colorful I Know My Redeemer Lives flipchart here.
Pass out dance scarves to each class. While teachers pass scarves to each child in their class, post the 4 dance scarves actions on the board. You can find a 1-page outline with each of the actions and simple visuals in the printable later in this post!

Begin by demonstrating each action. Have the kids watch you do the action first, and then have them join in.
Try speaking the words and demonstrating the actions slowly. One way to do this is through a call and response. Speak the words and do the action for the first two lines. Then, have the kids, repeat the lines.
Once you feel comfortable using the actions, add in music! Try singing the first verse slowly while trying the dance scarves actions.
Continue practicing the first verse while using the dance scarves pattern.

I Know that My Redeemer Lives Dance Scarves Pattern
This dance scarves pattern uses just 4 simple actions! This pattern is easily repeatable for the additional 3 verses of the song, but is especially meant for the first verse. I’ve broken down the pattern for you here, but grab our printable for a quick reminder during primary!
1. Swish Left to Right
For this action, just swish your dance scarf from left to right at a comfortable arm height. You’ll use this action twice at the beginning of the song. Swish on every syllable.
I / know / that / my
What / com – / fort / this / sweet
2. Big Circle
Draw a large circle with your dance scarf – it can be clock-wise or counter-clockwise. Use this action twice for the end of the first two phrases.
Redeemer lives
Sentence Gives

3. Draw Scarves UP
Start with your dance scarf low, then slowly bring it up high. Use this action every time you sing “He lives” in the first verse.
4. ZigZag Down
Start with your dance scarf high in the air. Then, bring your scarf down by waving your scarf in a zigzag pattern. Use this action for phrases that follow the words, “He lives.”
- Who once was dead
- My ever-living Head
- To bless me with His love
- To plead for me above
- My hungry soul to feed
- To bless in time of need

Extension Activities:
- Cut out the dance scarves actions into cue cards. Randomly hold up the cards to mix up the order of actions during the song! Arrange the cards on the board and randomly point to an action. Do the action with your dance scarves until you switch to another action!
- Work together to create a pattern for the second verse of the song. The pattern for the first verse works well with the rest of the verses, but you can always switch an action for a new one!
- Split the room into 4 groups. Assign each group one of the dance scarves actions. Have each group sing the lyrics for their section and do the actions!
- Have small groups work together to come up with their own pattern for the first verse. Then, let each group teach their pattern to the class. This is a great way to get in lots of practice with the song!
