I Pray in Faith Body Rhythms
If you are looking for a simple way to help your primary children get some wiggles out as you practice this song, this body rhythms activity is just right for you! You’ll find that this purposeful movement idea requires very little prep and makes for a fun review!
In this movement pattern, we’ll be using just 5 simple actions: stomps, hand claps, arm rolls, knee pats, and spins. This pattern works well with both verses of this song, but I chose to focus on the first verse for this activity.
Let’s jump in and I’ll share how to incorporate this fun body rhythms activity into your singing time plans!

At the beginning of singing time, sing through I Pray in Faith once using a flip chart. If you aren’t familiar with using flip charts in singing time, these handy lyric sheets are a great tool for teaching primary songs. I find them very useful, especially when it comes time to review for your primary program.
Then, have everyone stand up! Tape the body rhythms pattern poster on the board to follow along with as you demonstrate each part of this pattern.
Demonstrate the first line of the pattern by stomping on each word, “kneel to –“ and clapping on the word, “pray.” Repeat these actions for the phrase, “ev – ‘ry day.”

Next, roll your arms as you sing, “I speak to Heav’nly” and clap on each syllable of the word, “Fa – ther.”
At this point, you may want to review the actions for just these two lines. I always like to teach a little bit at a time so that the pattern feels achievable for all the kids!

Next, pat your knees twice for the phrase, “He hears” and clap on each word, “answers me.” Stomp twice as you sing, “pray in” and finish with a fun spin on the word,” faith.”
Let’s try the entire pattern together! Who remembers the first action? Sing through the song a few more times and have some fun with this body rhythms pattern!

Body Rhythms Pattern:
I’ve included the full body rhythms pattern below. Each slash mark indicates a change in action and claps are on italicized words. If you need any clarification on these movements, my demonstration video included later in this post is a great resource!
- ( 2x) Stomp – Stomp – Clap – “I kneel to pray, / ev’ – ry day.”
- Roll Arms – Clap – Clap – “I speak to Heav’nly / Fa – ther.”
- Pat – Pat – Clap – Clap – “He hears and / answers me”
- Stomp – Stomp – Spin – “Pray in / faith”

Extension Activities:
- To simplify this pattern, alternate between double stomps and single claps throughout the entire song. You’ll have a few stomps that occur between words, but it will still follow with the beat of the song.
- Assign each class one line of the pattern. Have each class take turns singing along with their actions. Then, rotate and try a different line!
- Try this pattern with a partner! Clap across with a partner on each clap. All other actions will be the same!
- Alternate which foot you stomp with on each repeat for an added challenge.
