You will love the simplicity of this I’ll Stand Tall What Comes Next activity! One way to really see how well your primary children know a song is to leave out some of the lyrics. It’s such a tried-and-true singing time idea, and for good reason!

I’ll Stand Tall What Comes Next
Raise your hand if you have done some type of “finish the sentence” activity in your primary room… I’ll be surprised if you haven’t! There are so many ways to use this type of activity, from simply writing in lyrics to hosting a primary game show with prizes!
I’m bringing this classic back for Janice Kapp Perry’s song, I’ll Stand Tall. Although this song isn’t listed in the official Come Follow Me Old Testament Outline, it can be a great choice to tie in Old Testament stories as you plan your primary program.
For this activity, I’ve created simple word strips with incomplete phrases from the first verse and chorus of this song. This activity is super easy to adapt for any part of the song you’d like to focus on.
As you review together, grab a marker and finish each incomplete phrase to put your song knowledge to the test!
Sing through the first verse of I’ll Stand Tall (flip chart) at the beginning of singing time. This is a great way to refresh the lyrics, especially for any primary kiddos who may have been sick or out of town the week before.
Then, tape up the first page of incomplete song phrases. David faced the giant with only…. Who knows what comes next?
Pick a volunteer to come up and write in the rest of the phrase – “Five small stones!” Awesome! Let’s try another one. “He did not fear. He knew…” What did David know? Exactly! He knew “the Lord was near.” David had faith that Heavenly Father would help him defeat the giant.
Take turns completing each phrase. Once you’ve finished all the verse phrases, sing through just the verse before moving on to the chorus.
Work through the chorus the same way until you have filled in all the missing lyrics. You are so awesome! Let’s sing through it one more time now that we have all the missing words back in the song.
Share a brief testimony before closing. This is the most important part of singing time! As music leaders, we have the unique opportunity to teach the gospel through music. With that in mind, taking even just a minute to share your testimony about a truth taught in the song can help your primary children build their testimonies.

Here are just a few examples of what comes next phrases for the first verse and chorus. I definitely recommend grabbing the printable version for easy singing time set up! How quickly can you finish each of these phrases?
- David faced the giant with only … “Five small stones”
- I’ll stand … “Tall”
- I do not… “Walk alone”
- His spirit will… “Direct me”
- He’s on my side so… “I can stand tall!”
Extension Activities:
- Make it a call-and-response activity for younger primary children. Call out a phrase, then see if they can finish the line. Hum the line for an extra hint.
- Cut out all the word strips and put them in a basket. Choose one volunteer to come up and pick one paper from the basket. Have them read the phrase aloud, then see if they can finish the phrase!
- Divide the chalkboard in half. On one side of the board, write the first few words of song phrases, with end fragments on the other side. Match the phrases to complete each line!
- Cut out all the phrases, as well as word strips with the missing lyrics. Randomly pass out word strips and have the kids move around the room to find their “match.”
