More Than Enough Pitch Leading

Sing through More Than Enough once, before introducing this activity.

Briefly explain what pitch is (how high or low a sound is) and how it changes throughout a song’s melody. Today, we are going to learn about pitch and this song’s melody as we lead the pitch!

Invite the children to hold their hand with their palm facing flat towards the ground. Move your hand up and down following the pitch chart with your hand staying horizontal.

For example, following the first line of the song, you’ll sing “Maybe I’ll never know the love it takes” and start with your hand relatively low at your belly, move it up one step, then back down to your starting height, then down, then down one more step. Jump back up 2 steps to your starting height, then down one more time. Finally, you’ll jump up a couple of steps and hold that pitch as you hold out the note for “takes.”

Demonstrate following the pitch leading for the first line of the song. Then ask the children if they are ready to follow along. Start again from the beginning and sing through the first verse or the entire song, depending on your teaching focus as the children follow your lead and the pitch leading chart.

Extension Activities:

  • This pitch leading activity is a great opportunity to focus on dynamics. Are there certain notes you want them to hold out, sing slower, sing louder or quieter to add effect, or any other dynamics? After singing through the pitch leading chart as is, then mark it up and adapt it to fit your dynamics. Or pause and adjust as you teach the song if something doesn’t sound quite right, such as a note not being held out long enough or a word being sung a bit too long.
  • Invite 1-2 children to come up front to help lead the pitch leading – one on each side of the room. You can hand them a fun object to lead the pitch with – try a spatula, a rhythm stick, a flashlight, a fun pointer, or anything else you can find!
  • Use the quarter page size Pitch Leading cards to challenge the kids to work together in small groups and arrange the pitch leading cards into the correct order as you sing. You can then invite them to pick 2 to flip over – see if they can do those ones by memory! Keep flipping over more cards trying to do the pitch leading by ear.
