On a Golden Springtime Rhythm Sticks

Focus on the rhythm with this fun living music activity (archives)! As you teach this sweet primary song, keep everyone engaged with this fun & simple rhythm sticks pattern!

If you don’t have a set of rhythm sticks, no worries! You can easily swap out for some pencils or even use your hands!

I’ve created a fun rhythm sticks pattern with 4 different rhythms to incorporate as you sing this song together! In this post, you’ll find detailed activity instructions, a printable pattern, PLUS a demonstration video! Let’s jump in!

Before bringing out the rhythm sticks, sing through the first verse of On a Golden Springtime (flip chart here).

Then, bring one one set of rhythm sticks and begin tapping each syllable as you sing or say the phrase,” On a gold-en.” Then, quickly rub your rhythm sticks together for the word, “springtime.” Repeat this pattern for the phrase, “un-der-neath the ground.”

Now that you have everyone’s attention, let’s try it together! Pass out enough rhythm sticks for each child or buddy up to share a set!

Have the children copy your actions for the first line of the song. The next part of the pattern is simple! Start by tapping one knee with your rhythm stick and alternate back and forth to the beat of the second line. This means we’ll only be tapping on the 1st and 3rd count of each measure.

Here’s an example: “A tiny seed-ling lay a-sleep un-til the sun shone down.” Each italicized word is emphasized a little bit more than the other words.

Then next part of the pattern is my favorite. Drum roll, please! As you sing, “Awake, Awake, O little seed” quickly alternate tapping your knees as if they were a drum. Follow this with a steady tap for each word of the phrase, “Push upward to the light.”

Demonstrate the rhythm sticks pattern line by line, using the printable visuals to help the kids remember the pattern. When you have tried each line separately, put it all together!

Rhythm Sticks Pattern:

Steady Tap 4x: For this action, simply tap one rhythm stick above the other as you sing each syllable.

Ex. “On a gold-en” and “un-der-neath the”

Fast Rub: This action works best if you have one smooth stick and one with ridges. Quickly rub the sticks together to make a cool sound!

Ex. “Springtime” and “ground”

Alternate Knee Taps 7x: For alternating knee taps, start by tapping your right knee with one rhythm stick. Then, using your other rhythm stick, tap your left knee.

“A tiny seed-ling lay a-sleep un-til the sun shone down.”

Drum Roll: This next action is so much fun! For this action, we’ll pretend that our knees are a drum. Like the action above, we’ll be alternating hands. But this time, we’ll be tapping as fast as we can to make a “drumroll” sound!

Ex. “Awake, awake, O little seed!” and “The day is bright. With all your might”

Steady Tap 5x: “Push upward to the light.”

*Optional Ending: For a fun way to end the pattern, swap the last tap for a fast rub on the word, “Light.”

Extension Activities:

  • Divide the group in half and have one side do the rhythm sticks actions for the first two lines of the song, and have the other side do the rhythms for the second half (beginning with “Awake”). Then, switch!
  • Simplify the pattern by using only two actions. Use a steady tap for all the short notes and do a fast rub on all the long notes.
  • If you have a larger primary, try dividing the class into 4 groups – one for each action in the pattern. Have each group sing and do just their assigned rhythms. You can even turn this into a 4 corners activity and rotate to a new action each time. See this I Want to Live the Gospel Four Corners activity for an example!
