Shine On Finger Lights
Have you ever used finger lights in singing time? They are so much fun! Finger lights are cheap, easy, and sure to keep everyone engaged during singing time! This set of finger lights from Amazon comes with multiple colors and plenty of lights for even a large primary.
Finger lights can be SO much fun to bring into the Primary room! You can pickup a set of finger lights for really cheap on Amazon here. It’s a good idea to add a dab of hot glue to keep the battery compartment shut. Just search this blog for more ideas for using them with your Primary children.
Before passing out finger lights, begin by singing through the first verse and chorus of Shine On (lyrics here). Then, introduce this activity by turning off the lights and turning on your finger light.
Quietly begin singing the Primary song Shine On (archives) with “My light is but a little one” as you hold up your finger light. Demonstrate the next line by drawing a big heart in the air. Create a big sun with your light as you sing the third line and hold your light up high as you sing the last line of the verse.
Can you try it with me? Pass out the finger lights and post the finger lights visual pattern on the board. Does anyone remember the first action I did?
Work through the actions for the verse line by line, then sing the entire verse with the pattern!
Finally, demonstrate the actions for the chorus by covering and uncovering your light each time you sing, “Shine on.” This will create such a cool “flashing” effect as you sing the chorus. Wave your finger lights in the air as you sing, “Bright and clear” and finish with a cool spin for the last phrase of the song.
Try the entire pattern together and have some fun with this finger lights activity that is sure to “light” a smile on their faces!
Finger Lights Pattern:
This finger lights pattern was specially created to pair with the lyrics of the first verse and chorus. However, they can be easily adapted to fit the second verse as well! I’ve included all the finger lights actions below, but be sure to grab the printable later in this post for some visuals!
- “My light is but a little one” – Wiggle finger light
- “My light of faith and prayer” – Draw a big heart
- “But lo, it shines like God’s great sun” – Create a big circle sun
- “For it was lighted there” – Hold your light up high
- “Shine on” – Cover your light with your hand, then quickly uncover your light
- “Bright and clear” – Wave up high
- “Now the day is here” – Spin in a circle
Extension Activities:
- Have one side of the room sing and do the finger light actions for the verse, and have the other side do the chorus. Then, switch!
- Pick 6 random shapes to create with your finger lights, one for each line. Put the shapes in a bowl and have volunteers come up to choose shapes for each line. This creates some great variety as you sing!
- Choose finger light actions for key words in the song. For example, hold your light up high each time you sing, “light” or wave it in the air when you sing “brightly.”
- Have the children work in small groups to create their own action for one line of the song! Put together your new pattern by having each group share their actions with the class!
